Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. How did it come about? Have you been feeling ill for a while? Or were you getting checked for something else?
Were you given a result of your HbA1c that most likely formed the basis of your diagnosis? That can help you understand where you are currently sitting on the spectrum of diabetes, and potentially how significant the changes you may need to make are.
There are 3 main options at your disposal to manage your diabetes
The first is the food you eat - specifically the total amount of carbohydrates (not just ‘sugars’). While there are obvious things like cakes, biscuits, sweets and sugary drinks that you will want to cut out straight away, you might be surprised how much *all* carbohydrate affects your BG levels, including rice, pasta, potatoes, bread, pastry, grains, cereals and many fruits.
The second is exercise and activity. These can really help your body take up glucose directly, and also improve your insulin sensitivity for anything up to 24 hours or more afterwards. It doesn’t have to be anything particularly full-on, just whatever you can manage, and hopefully enjoy!
The third is any medication that might help your body and your metabolism along a bit. There shouldn’t be any stigma attached to getting a bit of a hand if your body needs it (this is easy as a T1, because insulin isn’t optional!). So don’t worry if medication is recommended - you need what you need.
