At risk of diabetes
Hi I'm 39 I had gestational diabetes with both my children during pregnancy. I had my 6 monthly screen test and have had a result of 6.2. So it time to get my act together and start diet controlling better. Any advise would be fab. I have a diabetic nurse appointment on 12/8.

Hi Tina, welcome.
All you need to know to get this under control is within these threads! Carbohydrates are the beasties that cause our blood sugars to rise, in particular rice, pasta, potatoes and bread, although there are low carb breads available if you can’t bear the thought of giving it up, Livlife is around 4 carbs a slice, you can get it in Waitrose or Asda. Fruit is also high in natural sugar so be careful, especially the tropical ones. Some can tolerate a few strawberries or blueberries but testing your blood regularly is the best way to work out what foods are best for you and what to avoid. With veg, cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, courgettes are good, root veg best avoided or kept to minimum. Peas are quite high as is sweet corn. All meat, eggs, bacon, mushrooms are great. Take some time to read as much as you can and then ask any questions you have, everyone is really friendly, we get it and all started where you are now :D

Thank you Cathy Im aware of the carbs and root veg as I had gestational diabetes. It's just a massive life style change for me. Do we test our bloods 1 or 2hrs after eating?

Hi, Tina

We generally test first thing in the morning, before eating or drinking anything, before meals and then two hours after eating.

Martin
Thank you I tested after 1hr for breakfast that explains why my levels were high then right at 2hr test. (7.6).
