Hi,
My dr says my Blood test is worrying and I could be prediabetic. I bought an accu-chek, and on waking my reading was 4.9 did it again two hours after breakfast of Yeo valley, sugar, fat free yogurt and muesli, no added sugar, 5.9, after ham sandwich lunch it was,8.9, then tonight after, steak and all home grown, potatoes, carrots, and beans it was9.1. I've had no added sugar today, never eat cakes or biscuits. Are these reading anything to worry about

Hi Beachbouy, welcome to the group.....

I think you have just learned your first lesson, bread & potatoes are very starchy & tend to spike out BG levels. Our problem is with carbohydrates, sugar is just a very simple carbohydrate. It's worth trying to repeat the test but omit the bread & potatoes....
When testing foods we look for a BG rise of no more than 2-3 MMol 2 hours after eating

Thanks Martin, will give the carbs a miss and see what happens, still not sure what a reasonable reading is.

still not sure what a reasonable reading is.
Unfortunately that is a tough question that changes as your BG comes under control, a good start is to find out what your HbA1c is, this test is a 3 month average of your BG levels.... from this you can determine how high you have been running continuously. Next is to log your FBG & find what the average is, between 4-7 is good though you don't want to reduce your average too fast. As people say, "this is a marathon, not a sprint". Next, as we discussed find out what foods cause spikes (measures from just before eating to 2 hours afterwards)
