Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello, new to this, was diagnosed Type 2 this week. Any encouragement or advice would be very gratefully received. Feeling like a bit of a failure right now ..

Hi @Doozer76 and welcome to the forum. Tell us a bit about how you came to be diagnosed and the results of any tests you have had done and you will get all the help and encouragement you need to get things sorted. We have all been where you are now and know exactly what it is like so fire away with anything you need to know. Nothing is considered to simple on here.

Hi @Doozer76 welcome to the forum.
Please don't beat yourself up, the past is done and there's nothing you can do about it.
But you can do something about your diabetes now you know about it. I had a dreadful diet before, full of kitkats, crisps and mini cheddars, and I'm eating better and losing weight in an effort to get and keep my blood sugar levels under control.
You can make a plan and do it too. Have a go throught the Learning Zone and find out about diabetes, read the forums about what people are eating, or how they're losing weight, or whatever's relevant to you. But make a plan. We're all happy to answer questions and give you support.

You're not a failure. I had similar thoughts when diagnosed 3 months ago, as I knew it ran in the family and didn't do anything to lose weight and prevent it. However, since then I just leapt into changing my lifestyle, have lost a lot of weight and feel a lot better. My diet was atrocious - beer, burgers, crisps, sweets, biscuits and anything other rubbish I could find. Now it's Salmon, chicken, vegetables and even broccoli! There is a lot of info here about the condition and the forums are a great source of information - and there are some good cookbooks around with recipes that are quick and tasty. (Some of them written by people who are diabetic.)

What advice/help did you GP give you?

Welcome to the forum @Doozer76

Sorry to hear how your diagnosis has made you feel. Those feelings of guilt and self blame are not at all uncommon, and many here will completely understand them.

But be kind to yourself. And don’t allow yourself to get dragged down by those feelings. You can’t change the past, amd what matters far, far more is what you do next. So many forum members look back and realise that their diagnosis became a sort of catalyst which led to them making changes (perhaps things that had been wanting to do for some time), and they feel fitter, lighter, and healthier than they have for years.

Let us know how things are going and ask any questions as they crop up..

First and most important: you are not a failure. Contrary to popular opinion type 2 is not a self-inflicted condition. However, once you are diagnosed taking control of it is very much up to you.

That is good news because the most important part of your treatment regimen will be the foods and drinks you choose for good blood glucose management. I wrote this to help you begin: Getting Started. I know you will have lots of questions after you read that and the pages it links to. Come back and ask them all.
