Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Good afternoon all diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes 2 days ago, I shouldnt be surprised as mother, grandmother and Uncle had it. Any info would be appreciated, have booklets from drs, so much info out there, very confusing, people say Keto diet good, I did have high cholestral at one point but now under control with medication so dont want to upset the applecart so to speak. Look forward to chatting.

HI. Welcome to the Forum. Whilst low carb is the recommended way to go I have read that whilst Keto may be good as part of a weight loss programme it isn't necessarily sustainable as a lifestyle dietary choice. Some members, however, do follow a very low carb way of eating. For my part I aim for no more than 100g carb per day.

If you're new to all this you might find the attached info useful as a basic guide. In the meantime if you have any questions please ask.

Were you given an HbA1c result at diagnosis? This can help you understand how significant any changes to your diet may need to be, as you might be a whisker over 48mmol/mol or way up into 3 figures!

Diabetes is a serious condition, but it’s also one that can usually be managed well with a few changes and adaptations - it’s something that you can learn to live well with, and it shouldn’t stop you doing things you enjoy. Try not to be disheartened about your diagnosis, many people on the forum later reflect that their diagnosis became a catalyst which prompted them to make positive changes towards a healthier and more active life. Perhaps changes that they had been intending to make for years.

One of the biggest questions when trying to get to grips with your diabetes is often ‘what can I eat’ and while there are obvious things like cakes, biscuits, sweets and sugary drinks that you will want to cut out straight away, you might be surprised how much *all* carbohydrate affects your BG levels, including rice, pasta, potatoes, bread, pastry, grains, cereals and many fruits.

Many new members find it can be really helpful to keep a food diary for a week or two. Be brutally honest! Note down everything you eat and drink. It can be especially helpful to estimate the amount of carbohydrate in the meals and snacks to give you an idea of which foods are the main sources of carbs in your menu.

When it comes to managing your diabetes, it’s best to make changes to your menu and activity levels gradually - partly because they need to be sustainable long term, but also because very rapid and sudden changes to blood glucose levels are harder on the fine blood vessels, and changing things more gently will give your body time to adapt.
