Hello and welcome! How did you come to be diagnosed?

Hello and welcome to the forum @Jaxg 🙂

Came to be diagnosed by of all things going to the loo a lot and Thank you all for welcoming me.

Classic symptom! How you coping on the Metformin?

Ok, was put up to 2 tablets last year and waiting for my yearly check to see what's happening now, am trying to lose some weight which I know will help but a little difficult at the moment, as it proberly is for most people

Oh that's good as lots of people have gastric upsets with it. So have you changed your diet much over this time and has your GP ever mentioned testing your blood glucose at home.

I have changed my diet a little, but for various reasons I have never seen a dietician so don't really know how to change it other than cut out the obvious things. I am eating breakfast everyday now which I never used to do. I started with a new Dr in Jan 2020 and haven't seen him and only seen a diabetic nurse once since I moved here, waiting for my yearly check and hope to find out more then.

Eating breakfast might not be a good move depending upon what you are having. If you are now having toast or breakfast cereal on a morning when previously you weren't having anything then you may have actually changed your diet for the worse as regards diabetes. If you want to continue with breakfast some whole milk natural Greek yoghurt with a few berries and mixed seeds is a good choice or eggs, boiled, scrambled, fried or an omelette but go very steady on any bread/toast you have with them.... maybe just half a slice of a seeded loaf.

What you may not be aware is that diabetes is not just about sugar but all carbohydrates (starches and sugars) which are broken down by the digestive system and end up in our blood stream. As diabetics our ability to utilise that glucose is no longer working efficiently and the glucose gets stranded in our blood for longer than it should, where it can cause damage to small blood vessels and nerves. One of the best ways of helping your body to cope is by putting less carbohydrates into your system through what you eat. So cutting right down on added sugar and cakes and biscuits and sweets but also reducing portion size of starchy carbs like bread and pasta and rice and potatoes and breakfast cereals is hugely beneficial in reducing Blood Glucose (BG) levels and helping to manage your diabetes and will also help you to lose weight. Eating meat/fish/eggs/cheese/mushrooms/nuts with plenty of green veg is good and many of us use cauliflower or celeriac as a substitute for potato. They can be boiled and mashed with a dollop of cream cheese and a teaspn. of mustard if you like it or celeriac can be cut into chips, par boiled, tossed in oil and oven baked. Cauli can also be grated and used as a replacement for couscous or rice. If you read around the forum you will get lots of ideas about how to modify your diet. I know it seemed mind bogglingly impossible to me to live without bread but 2 years down the line I really don't miss it, but when you have spent all your life basing every meal around a big portion of carbs it is a lot to get your head around initially. I can only tell you that I feel so much healthier for cutting these foods right back.
