Hi everyone I’m a newbie. Happy to be part of the diabetic community on here. Been diabetic for 25 years. Recently started on an Omnipod. Wondered how people have found the transition from pens in regards to gaining on losing weight. Heard different things ❤

Welcome to the forum @Lisamatt

@stephknits and @mark king are podders with @m1dnc about to start... and we have a number of pump users of other types to compare notes with. 🙂

Transition from pens to pump can take a little getting used to, and ultimately it should be a far more flexible and accurate management system.

For me it meant I ditched a lot of hypos, which mant a lot of hypo treatments I didn’t need to have.

The absorption of insulin is generally more effective via infusion sites, so you will probably find your Total Daily Dose goes down.

Both of those suggest you should find it possible to lose weight on a pump

BUT...

Insulin is always on, and always available with a pump and the old ‘I fancy a snack but don’t want to faff about with an extra injection’ barrier almost completely disappears... so you do have to be disciplined with yourself and resist the urge to nibble.

I have been on a pump for a smidge over 8 years now and my weight has been pretty stable throughout. It may wander up and down by a couple of pounds here and there, but only when I eat more or eat less really... not directly pump related.

Good luck with your pump switchover. Keep asking questions!

Thank you so much that’s very helpful X

Hi and welcome. I have been podding for just over 3 years now and am still very happy with it. Around the same weight as when started. Like Mike, I find snacks more difficult to resist as I can just press a few buttons and am away, but also have fewer hypos (although that is partly down to heading them off with the libre). Hope you enjoy podding!

Welcome to the forum @Lisamatt from another pumper.

I don’t use an Omnipod but do remember the switch from pens to pump.
It felt like a leap of faith and I was very nervous at the start. However I am so glad that I did the switch. It reduced my hypos, improved my HbA1c and most of all made life a lot more flexible.

I did not find I put on weight at all. In fact I lost weight, I think because I was no longer needing to feed hypos. I also found that the Libre improved things as I saw the spikes I was having after meals and that was another big improvement in things.

I hoe that the transition goes smoothly, and keep firing away with questions.
