Hello there, I am waiting for Diabetes to grab me, both birth parents have it and I had gestational high blood sugars, my last fasting blood test showed results in the higher end. I'm looking for support and making contact with Diabetes survivors; I am worrying about the diet, I have a lot of allergies so it's all looking overwhelming to me at the moment.

Hi Lindsey Welcome to the forum. Feel free to ask questions we're a friendly bunch here.
Am I right in assuming you've been told you have pre diabetes?

Lindsey...diabetes is overwhelming at times...many of us here have felt that...often diagnosed by sheer chance when another health problem has arisen...fortunately (or unfortunately whichever way you view it) you have an indication it is a distinct/likely possibility...my assumption from what you've said...apologies if I have that wrong...so at least you may have an opportunity to avoid the onset of diabetes...delay it...side step it even ...keep it at bay...wondering like Ljc if you have been told you are pre-diabetic...what were the circumstances of you being told you had a fasting blood test showed high results?...a lot of questions there...if you would prefer not to answer that's understandable...but...if you let us have a little more information...it will be easier to give the appropriate advice...make the right suggestions...this is the right place for support...so...a very positive first step...keep us updated...hope to hear more from you.

Hi Lindsey. Welcome to the gang.

Wow......what a lovely welcome......I've not been told anything by a Doctor, I asked for a print out of my last blood test which was fasting; I noted myself my fasting blood sugar was 5.9 with 6.0 being the top of the scale.
So i'm looking at dietary control; I have high cholesterol and am overweight so need to drop some lbs and look at this eating regime. Unfortunately I have colitis along with food allergies so relooking at my diet is a bit overwhelming; I went through the dietary rethink 5 years ago for the colitis and allergies. I'm trying not to panic

Welcome to the forum Lindsey Jane. Do browse threads in the Weight Loss Group, Food / Recipes and Exercise / Activity sections, and ask specifics. There are several people who have diabetes of various types, as well as coeliac disease, although it more commonly goes with type 1 than 2.

Welcome to this wonderful forum

Hi Lindsey Jane , Welcome To the forum. I too have colitis. If I can help at all please let me know

Hello to Lindsey.

Hi - and it's purely carbohydrate that diabetic bodies have difficulty with - so think what you wouldn't miss if you got rid of it. Sugar in drinks is the very first thing obviously along with full sugar pop - but of course they're sposed to be cutting that down anyway.

All the 'starchy' carbs are bad news to us generally too - so rice, normal wheat flour and anything that is made with flour, so that includes pasta, spuds and some root veg are the main culprits. There's a lot of natural sugar (fructose) in 'soft and juicy' fruits (eg nectarines, oranges, cherries etc) - and the body doesn't distinguish and say to itself - oh fruit's healthy so I'll treat it different LOL

But anyway - some good news - a lot of people find their cholesterol level decreases when they reduce their intake of carbs - as well as improving their BG level!

It might be an idea to tell us what you can't tolerate to eat and then we can try and suggest things that you can!
