Newbie

If he’s very unwell and suspected t1 why is the blood test on Monday not immediately at a&e? He could have DKA by Monday.

Hi and welcome.

What is the blood test that he is having on Monday? Is it to test for Type 1? Hopefully they have already started him on insulin? If so, which ones? If not then do you have a means for testing his Blood Glucose (BG) levels and ketones?

Hi there, and a very warm welcome to you. I’m really sorry to hear your son’s been so unwell, that must be incredibly stressful for both of you. You’ve come to a very supportive space, and there are lots of people here with lived experience who completely understand how overwhelming this all can feel at first. Do keep us posted on how he gets on on Monday. And please feel free to ask anything or just talk things through - you’re not alone in this. <3

Welcome to the forum @Mommybennett . Sorry to hear about your son’s diagnosis, but pleased that you have found the forum.

If he is thought to have T1 I am assuming that he has been given insulins. If so which ones?
This information can help us in response to any questions you pose.

Do you know that blood test they are doing on Monday? There are two main ones for T1.
C peptide
This measures the amount of insulin your body is making. With T1 your son’s beta cells (which make insulin) will have been destroyed by some antibodies. This is a auto immune condition
GAD antibody test
This measures the presence of the antibodies in the blood.

Let us know how he is getting on.
Come back with any questions that you have.

Sorry to hear about your son feeling poorly @Mommybennett

How did the appointment go today?

If he has been given a confirmed diagnosis with T1, you may want to sign up for the Learning Zone, (the orange tab in the main menu)

Additionally these two books are well regarded among T1s here

Type 1 Diabetes in Children Adolescents and Young People by Ragnar Hanas - considered to be the 'bible' for children and young people on insulin regimes. Don't be misled by the title - this book is relevant to people of all ages!

Think Like a Pancreas by Gary Scheiner - A practical guide to managing diabetes with insulin

Let us know how you are getting on, and fire away with any questions he has.
