I’ve recently been diagnosed with Type 2 , I had been attending a preventive programme but at Christmas I had acute pancreatis attributed to gallstones which were discovered last year following a health check. I have nine family members who all have/had type 2 a few on insulin. I’ve been given slow release metformin and awaiting gall bladder removal.

Hi there @slong , and welcome to the forum! Thank you for sharing your story with us. It sounds like you’ve been through a really challenging few months, between the diagnosis and the acute pancreatitis. That’s a lot to deal with, especially with the added wait for gallbladder surgery.
It’s completely understandable to feel a bit overwhelmed, especially with such a strong family history of Type 2 in the mix, but know that you're not alone in this. If you ever want to talk through what you're eating, how you're feeling, or what questions to ask your care team, feel free to reach out - this community is full of people at different stages who really understand what it’s like. Please keep us posted on how things go with your gallbladder surgery and managing your diabetes in the meantime.

And welcome to the forum from me as well, @slong. I did it the other way round, I had my gall bladder removed first, then a year later, I had acute pancreatitis three years later, I had two more acute pancreatitis attacks spaced out three years apart, and that was before being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes - life can be fun at times! I hope you get your operation soon. Good luck.

Hi and welcome.

It is possible, likely even, that your gall bladder and pancreatitis issues are responsible for your diabetes, in which case you would be Type 3c rather than Type 2. You have my sympathies by the way as I know that acute pancreatitis is excruciating as well as life threatening. My mother had 3 bouts of it.
Type 3c is diabetes caused by damage to the pancreas from disease (such as pancreatitis), surgery, trauma or alcohol and your recent acute pancreatitis event may well have damaged your pancreas.

Do you know what your HbA1c result is which led to you being diagnosed with Diabetes and prescribed Metformin? You mention slow release Metformin.... Just wondering if you are suffering digestive/bowel issues and that is why slow release has been prescribed? If so, you might also have Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency due to the damage to your pancreas and need Creon or similar digestive enzyme supplement?

Many GPs have little understanding of the different types of diabetes and Type 3c is a recent category so again less likely to be known or understood at primary care level than Type 2 which is more common.

Anyway, I hope you find being a member of the forum as helpful, informative and supportive as I have over the past 6 years since I joined.

Welcome to the forum @slong

Sorry to hear about your diabetes, gallstones, and pancreatitis - that’s a lot to be going on with!

Hope your gall bladder op comes through in a timely manner, and you recover speedily.

Let us know how things go 🙂
