Hi newbie here, to this forum not to diabetes.
Type 2 for last 20 years. At the moment on 1000mg's twice a day of Metformin, was on Empagliflozin but made me pee too often especially after radio therapy and hormone therapy for prostate cancer, it didn't bring my levels down either.
Now be put on Gliclazide, how long does it take to do something ? Been a week, levels still 11-15 first thing.
Thanks

Malc

Hi @Malc1234 and welcome to the forum - my understanding is it does take a few days to work (from a quick search on this forum) so a week may not be long enough for it to have an immediate effect - You may find some more information on the Diabetes UK Website - try this link:

If medications are still not improving your levels that implies that you are having too many carbohydrates in your diet, however with the new medication you still need some carbs as that is how the medication works and going too low carb can result in too low blood glucose.
What sort of dietary regime are you following as some tweaks with that may help.

Welcome to the forum @Malc1234

Hope the gliclazide works well for you. It's not uncommon for people's metabolisms to need a little extra help after a few decades of living with diabetes. It's a condition that can change over time.

Can you remember your most recent HbA1c result?

Waking readings can be a bit stubborn, and the last ones to come down. Partly this can be because for many people, the liver releases glucose in the early hours to fire up the burners for the day (which is known as Dawn Phenomenon).

Have you tried taking pairs of readings immediately before meals and again 2hrs after the first bit to see how the portion-sizes of carbohydrates are balancing with your meds/metabolism? That might be a way to identify any particularly 'spiky' meals. Ideally you'd want the after reading to be no more than 2-3 higher than the before reading.

Lots of members here have found before/after meal checks very helpful in fine-tuning their menu.
