At risk of diabetes
Hi everyone, I was diagnosed in June 2022, put on Metformin and thats been it really. Went on the Desmond course (on-line) but didn't get much from it only not to eat too many bananas. Anyway, first couple of months I did well, cur back on everything and lost 1st. But, ive gone the other way and I cannot stop eating sugary foods! I am so annoyed at myself but cannot ’get back in the zone’. Even though I know I am damaging myself. Ive just found out I am going to be a grandma again and i cried thinking I could go blind and not see them grow up if I dont pull myself together. I don’t really understand carb counting - is there anything i can download that is easy to understand? The practice nurse is a locum and to be honest wasn't very informative or helpful- i had to ring her 3 times to remind her to refer me on the course!
any advice would be great. Thanks for reading my post x

That is what motivated me to get a grip and tackle my diagnosis, I wanted to be there for my children and grand children.
Have a look at https://lowcarbfreshwell.co.uk/ as it may give you some ideas for ways of modifying your diet. You do need to be aware of the carbs going into your mouth otherwise it will be a losing battle and you will find yourself on more and more meds.

Hi @Lyn147 I was diagnosed with Type 2 on 30th May 2022, I didn't get much information or help from my gp practice, especially after I said I wanted to try and reduce the numbers myself rather than take medicines. The good people on this forum have helped with advice, support and encouragement, I purchased the book carbs and cals (from Amazon) which I referred to before every meal checking portion sizes, carbs and at first calories. The book is made up of pictures and breaks down the carbs for different amounts/portions. six months in I rarely look at it! I have 2 beautiful granddaughters almost 5 and 18 months, one of the funniest moments in the last 6 months and after I had lost about 2 stone my oldest granddaughter was giggling and saying "nanna can run" as I chased after her whilst she was riding her bike, 🙂 whenever I am tempted to stray I remember that moment and it keeps me focused. Good luck, you can do this!!

Sorry you didn’t get much out of the Desmond course - forum members seem to have a bit of a mixed experience with that one, and I think it can depend on who is leading it.

Sounds like you’ve identified some pretty strong motivation for trying to turn things around. Hope this helps you to steer clear of sweet and sugary things. It doesn't take long for tastebuds to reset, and the less sugar you have in your diet (both natural and added) the more strongly you will taste the sweetness in things that you couldn’t before 🙂

Hang in there and try to make small manageable changes to your menu - I’m not sure what changes you tried since you were at risk of diabetes, but it might be helpful to keep a food diary for a few weeks as a sort of benchmark of where you currently are. It can be especially helpful to spend the time squinting at packets, and getting the weighing scales out to try to work out roughly how much carbohydrate is in different meals and snacks.

Then work at finding some swaps for and ‘big hitters’, or simply aim to reduce portion sizes.
