Hello everyone, my names daniel. I've been living with diabetes type 1 for 24 years. After many years of not knowing too much about it. I now have a better understanding of it. I would like to chat to people about their type 1 experiences.

Hello

Hi, I'm new to the diabetes uk. Are you a long term diabetic?. Do you know of any social events, where diabetics can get together and talk about their condition and how they deal with it.

There aren’t any diabetes groups near me. Probably depends where you live. I’ve had diabetes for 14 years

Welcome to the forum @oliver1987

We hope to restart occasional forum meets (we switched to online zoom meetings during the pandemic).

Sadly I wasn’t organised to sort one out for the forum’s birthday this month, but hopefully we can have a meetup or two in a couple of places in the UK next year.

There are a few events that happen in London which might appeal to you, like TAD which is spearheaded by Prof Partha Kar

Ok, thank you everydayupsanddowns. Of course, yes I would like that. I've only ever had one to one communications with diabetic staff. As you know diabetes can cause anxiety and I think that's why I've never pushed to meet people with the same condition.

I thought the zoom meetings worked well, too. (Admittedly I was only able to participate in a few, but clashes are inevitable for any kind of meet-up.)

Yes I was looking forward to a few real-life meets, but they take a bit more organising!

What brought about this (recent) better understanding? I'm starting a face to face DAFNE course on Monday and hoping to get a much wider understanding of D for T1s and insulin dependency in general.
I would like to chat to people about their type 1 experiences.
I'm relatively new to diabetes and interested to read other people's experiences. Are you taking MDI or on a pump? If the latter how long for? How do you manage your D when taking exercise or with high levels of activity?

MDI as I'm on the fiasp insulin 3x a day and a lantus once in the evening. If I have a physical long day at work, I would reduce my intake by a couple of units than my monitor would suggest. I was always having hypos at least 2x a day without looking into this.
The libre sensor 2 are fantastic btw. A good way to keep a check on your A1c

Welcome to the forum @oliver1987

It can be difficult to find other people with T1, as we are a bit of a rarity, but there is loads of experience to tap into on here, along with loads of support.

The DAFNE course I went on was with four others with T1 and that was the first time of being with others after my diagnosis. Very informative, and a requirement in our area for those wanting to go on to a pump.

The first time that I met a large group of people with T1 was by volunteering at a Diabetes UK T1 Family weekend. I was surrounded by others managing their T1 day to day, along with loads of children with T1. It was great to be the normal people there, whilst the volunteers without T1 were the ‘oddities‘ in the group. It had a massive impact on my approach to my own management, and was a fabulous weekend.

I look forward to hearing more from you, drawing on your own experiences, as well as any questions that you have.
