So picked up my metformin from the chemist today, wow 8 boxes of tablets, As i have never really had to take much medication before it was a bit of a shock. So will start tommorow with my first dose then increase each week untill i am on 4 tablets per day. Still very much early days for me but glad i found this fourm as i have gained so much information already.
Be aware that there is the possibility of some pretty explosive consequences if you are sensitive to Metformin. Some people take it and there are no problems, but I was one of the unlucky ones and could not leave the house after taking the single tablet I managed.

I can confirm what drummer said. I was fine for the first week but every time I changed to 2 per day I was not good.

The doctors decided to keep me on just one per day rather than switch to slow release kind.

I didn't have any side effects from metformin, apart from a weird metallic taste in my mouth that went away after a week or so. I'm not sure why it agrees with some people and not others, but fingers crossed you don't have any problems with it.

Good to hear from some one who has had no side effects from taking menformin as i have been a little worried about starting on them, very much hope that i am indeed one of the lucky ones who has few problems on them as some of the side effects dont sound very pleasant

Hi I was on metformin for 3 years with no major problem s I did however find that I could no longer eat multi seed bread as I would get terrible explosive diarrhoea but I’m now on insulin and have not had any since and can’t eat seeded bread again

So seen my doctor today who has referred me for eye screening and a nutrition awareness course, have to take my mediction daily, continue to exercise and start eating more healthy and then see him in 3 months for a review. When asked him how long i would have to stay on the medication he to me i would probably have to take it for life, which was not the answer i was looking for, may also need help to get my cholesterol lowered but he will decide on that at my next review at which i will also need to bring a urine sample with me, Big changes for me as untill my diagnosis i had not had the need to see a doctor in a long time.

I had no side effects at all from Metformin.

So just had my first 3 month review today and am pleased to say my latest Hba1c is now 49 after being 97 on diagnosis, really was not expecting it to have came down so much so quickly, pleasantly suprised. Have to stay on the 4 metformin a day and stick to what i am doing until my next review in 6-9 months. The only negative was that my potasium levels were low so have to take some tablets for a week to try and raise my levels, but over pretty happy with how things are going. 🙂

Many congratulations on what is an excellent result! You have every right to be extremely proud of your achievement. I hope the doctor gave you a big pat on the back! Well done!

Well done Chartom3, I'm happy to hear that you've done so well. An HbA1c of 49 is a spectacular result and I hope you're proud of the hard work you've put in to get there. Nice one!

Ah well done! I am in same boat after 3 month down from 96 to 42 so similar ration. I take 3 metformin. I was on glicazide but they discontinued it because I had more bother keeping my sugars up than getting them down LOL. All your brightly coloured foods contain lots of potassium so fruits peppers oranges berries veggies too bananas and chocolate( SHHH!).Sometimes some blood pressure tablets can make you lose potassium and doctors will prescribe Slow K or as my mum kept on calling it Special K HEHE.

So been to see the nurse today to have my bloods done again and have been told i now have to start taking statins as my cholesterol levels are 6.6. Seems since being diagnosed with T2 in november that every time i get my bloods done there is something else found that i need treatment for. Is a reading of 6.6 high? Reading so much negative comments about taking statins, have had very little side effects with taking metforim so hoping the satins agree with me aswell.

They like people in the 'health risk' category which being diabetic counts as to have cholesterol below 4 and others below 5 so yours is higher than desirable.
Some people can reduce it with dietary measures but statins are effective. Some people do seem to be started on a higher dose than others and there are a few different statins and they don't all suit everybody and some are not recommended with certain other medications. Many people have no side effects, others do.

I was at a seminar at Dundee university last night about person centred pharma not profit centred pharma. A recently retired consultant cardiologist stood up at the end with a lot of passion and said big pharma were pushing statins at a degree he did not agree with. I guess he is allowed to say that now he is retired, because the problem with health care professionals is they follow systemic reviews such as NICE ( or as I like to call it not so NICE). It just about gags professionals. I think there is a need for statins for some people undoubtably but the level at which they are increasing prescriptions is alarming.
