Just got diagnosed last week with type 2 diabetes, been given metformin tablets and a booklet.

I am 51 and Muslim ( so follow a Muslim diet)., am recovering from hernia repair surgery which has restricted what i can do a probably on of the reason i got T2D.....

The wife has stopped all my sugar intake as she is panicking.

Appreciate any advice on what to eat and drink .

I do have a sweet tooth but that will have to take a back seat now

Welcome to the forum.
I assume as you have been given metformin you are a fair way into the diabetic zone which is anything above 47mmol/mol.
Dietary changes are going to be just as important, cutting added sugar is a good start but it is all carbohydrates which convert to glucose so those will be something you will also want to be looking at.
Meals based on meat, fish, eggs, dairy, nuts, vegetables and salads and fruits such as berries but being really careful of how much of the high carbohydrate food you have, these are things like bread, things made from flour, rice, potatoes and pulses.
I can see with a traditional Muslim diet it might be challenging when I think of all the lovely breads and tropical fruits which sadly are pretty high carbohydrate.
However there is still plenty you can eat.
This link may be helpful to you and your wife with some ideas. https://lowcarbfreshwell.co.uk/ This is a low carb approach which many have found successful. Low carb being less than 130g per day, so portion control is important.
I would also recommend the book or app Carbs and Cals as it gives the carb values of a whole range of foods.
Product labelling should give you the Total carbs which it is important to look at. If you buy at Asian shops I don't know
how good the labelling is on say a bag of chickpeas as opposed to what would be on a can.
