Type 2
Hello
I have just been diagnosed with Type 2, after having Impaired Fasting Hypoglycaemic. I have Thallassaemia (iron deficiency) and Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Lactose Intolerant. Any advice on how to deal with newly diagnosed Type 2, and how I can start changing lifestyle diets, sugar, and exercise.

My late father was Type 2 insulin dependant, with heart condition, along with his brothers and parents who all had type 2 late onset with heart conditions, so I knew I would inherit sometime. I appreciate any help... thanks

Welcome @CarTer*555 🙂

The basic idea is to cut down on carbs (all carbs not just sugar) as it’s carbs that put your blood sugar up. So that means cutting down on things like bread, rice, pasta, cereals, etc.

If you can give us an idea of your current diet, you’ll get some more tailored suggestions.

As for exercise - anything you can do is good, even walking as exercise helps control your blood sugar. So a daily walk, for example.

Yesterday helping to shove the Xmas trees and decorations back up the loft ladder for over an hour reduced my blood glucose, but nobody's going to do that on a daily basis!

Energetic housework including vacuuming rooms the stairs etc and suchlike also count. You haven't even set a foot outside the door yet!

Welcome to the forum @CarTer*555

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, and your other conditions. Shame about your lactose intolerance - lots of T2 members find cheese and various dairy options very helpful.

Given your family history you may already have a reasonable idea and background of T2, but it might also be helpful to read these for a good introduction - Maggie Davey’s Letter and Gretchen Becker’s book, which are both very useful starting points.

The ‘useful links’ thread is also a mine of helpful information - useful-links-for-people-new-to-diabetes
