Newbie with raised sugar, prediabetic.

Hello,
I'm female, fifty seven and overweight. I've been told I need to make changes to my diet and do more exercise to lower my blood sugar level to below 6. I love bread, pasta, rice, chips, cake, chocolate and jam. Oh, dear, I'm going to be grumpy on porridge, salads and crackers. Diabetic foods and treats are pricey so I guess I'll have to start baking myself. I'm vegetarian and live with two cats.

Well the good news is that porridge and crackers are not often recommended here.
Unfortunately, if you are pre or type two diabetic, a vegetarian diet might make things problematic, as to lower carbohydrates so many staples are excluded.
I can eat some chocolate, but I buy the 95 percent cocoa one from Lidl, as it is the sugar, not the cocoa content which is the problem.

The good news is that ‘diabetic’ foods are not beneficial for those with Diabetes, so no worries about the price of them. They may be low in sugar but they are often full of sweetness with often come with unpleasant side effects.

There are many on here who manage their diabetes through changes in their diet and levels of activity so you will be in good company. It is any carbohydrates that we eat that get converted into glucose once inside us, and to process that we need insulin. With Diabetes we are not able to produce enough to match the glucose in our blood, or we do make insulin but are not able to make effective use of it. It is useful to become familiar with the amount of carbs that you are eating so that you can then reduce this, by swapping to lower carb options or by reducing your portion size.

There is a lot of info in The Learning Zone, an orange tab at the top of this page, or in the menu (...) if on a phone. There is also plenty to read in the different threads on this forum. If you look in What did you eat today, you will see people’s tips about meals they have found work for them. The important thing is to find out what works for you. You have spotted the likely culprits like potatoes, rice and pasta. It doesn’t mean that you can’t eat these you just might need to reduce the portions. I found black bean pasta which gives me 6g of carbs rather than the 24g on my OH’s plate with normal pasta.

Some Type 2s can eat proper porridge, some can’t @Specs 🙂 Its not a problem being vegetarian despite the above comment. In fact, there are both veggie and vegan diets that help improve Type 2. You just reduce the pasta, rice, etc and increase the veg and protein. There are plenty of things you can eat🙂
 
I’d also add that so-called Diabetic Foods aren’t recommended and aren’t necessary, so you can save your money there!
