Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi. I am type 2, diagnosed in February. I was on insulin (novorapid and levemir) so had to inform dvla and needed to be 5 to drive. My question is, does anyone know if I still have to be 5 to drive if I’m no longer on insulin.? I come off insulin a few weeks ago and am on ozempic and metformin. Is the 5 to drive rule only necessary for insulin dependent diabetics? I manage to keep my glucose levels quite low generally between 4 and 9. I have tried speaking to my diabetes team about it but I can’t get anyone to answer the phone and they haven’t called me back.

There's some information here about it @Krisb . I don't know much about it, I'm afraid, but remember seeing the page.

Have you informed dvla that you’re no longer on insulin? I think when you get your standard licence back you won’t have those restrictions any more. It is of course still sensible to test before driving and be 4 or more before driving

I think the DVLA are most interested in whether any diabetes medication carries a risk of hypoglycaemia.

It seems that Ozempic may cause hypos, but is more likely to do so if taken alongside other glucose-lowering meds eg insulin or a sulfonylurea.

I’m not sure what the DVLA’s position is for Ozempic on it’s own.

You may need to call them to ask?
