Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi All. I was diagnosed with Type 2 about 4 weeks ago with a reading of 52, prescribed 500mg Metaformin. I'm so gutted as been following Weight Watchers since Jan and lost 3 stone so far. I'd cut down on all sweet stuff, carbs etc and already switched to wholegrain instead of white carbs. Anyway that's where I am! The issue that's on my mind is that I'm going on an all inclusive holiday of a lifetime in 3 weeks and I'm panicking. I want to enjoy the lovely food and cocktails but is it going to have a massive impact? Any tips or advice would be really appreciated. Thank you

Go for the protein and veg @JoJo257 and stick to small portions of carbs. If you eat meat and cheese, you should find plenty of options.

Cocktails are a little tricky as they often contain sugary fizz or juice. See if you can have them made with sugar-free lemonade or whatever. There are also some cocktails made with soda water and they’re ideal (name escapes me and I’m cooking so can’t look it up properly - Cosmopolitan, Manhattan? ) Champagne and dry wines are ok, as are spirits with diet mixers.

But mainly, do enjoy your special holiday and don’t let the diabetes ruin it.

It is still early days and you are only just over the line into diabetes, but it looks as though you have been given the 'healthy wholemeal' line - I'm afraid that grain of any colour is high carb, and for me the difference is so slight it is not worth entertaining.
On your holiday you could avoid the more boring carbs and eat or drink the ones you'll find memorable later. If I were to eat high carb it would be cream cake, ice cream and something with a cherry in it - and possibly a diminutive paper umbrella.

Thank you. Its all so mind-boggling! I do like the cherry and umbrella idea though!!

If your HbA1C of 4 weeks ago was the first you had then look upon it as a positive as all your hard work since Jan has most likely paid off in that it would probably have been much higher before. Your weight loss is fantastic so WW must be working for you but may need some tweaks to reduce the carbs a bit more, sadly whole grain makes little difference to the amount of carbs in the food item.
You should be able to enjoy the food by making careful selection, there will be more variety of fresh meats and fish and veg than you will have normally so easy to avoid some of the higher carb foods.
I think you might find after being restrictive over the past months you won't actually fancy some of the outrageously sugary, sickly looking deserts.

Hi there @JoJo257 My choice of cocktail when on holiday is either a gin and diet tonic, or a gin martini cocktail with a twist of lemon in a proper cocktail glass. Bloody marys can be quite low carb too as long as you don't have too many of them. Sometimes you can ask the barman to leave out the sugar syrup if you want something more exotic. Plus of course alcohol tends to keep your liver busy, so it won't be dripping it's own glucose into your system, which all helps. As to meals, I've only been on one inclusive holiday and it was a long time ago but a lot of the meals were buffet style, so quite easy to make good choices. Above all relax and enjoy the holiday.

Will there be any swimming between the lovely food and cocktails? That will help too. Have a fantastic holiday

I'm sure there will be some, plus I think they do a water aerobics session every day!

Mojitos are also good. They do have a dash of sugar syrup but are mainly lime juice, rum, mint and soda water. Campari and soda is low carb as well.

If you want a long drink, a white wine spritzer made with dry white wine and soda water is really nice.

Hi JoJo257, congrats on your progress thus far!

It's defo a balancing act but as it's not all doom and gloom. As advised, I'd go for the protein and fats as much as possible.

The great thing about holidays is the opportunity to engage in fun activities so even if you do indulge a bit, going for a lovely walk, giving it all you can on the dance floor and drinking a good amount of water can all help balance things out.

Have fun and let us know when you get back so we can support you as you get back on track.

Aww Cherrelle thank you so much. I certainly will. I'm not very active so maybe this will be the kick I need! Thanks for your support x

Can’t add to the great advice you’ve already had, so just wanted to say have an amazing holiday!

Hope you have an wonderful time, and as others have said - don’t let pesky diabetes spoil your enjoyment of the experience 🙂
