Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello everyone. Wow. I am a little overwhelmed wit all this diabetes. I am T2 for 7years. Been on abasaglar for 3weeks, now stopping and going on to Humulin m3 twice a day. Does anyone have any advice or tips? I still get so confused with carb counting and mmol and mgs or d's. So anxious about it all. My diabetes hba1c is 10.9.

NbA1c has not been measured in %ages for a number of years, 10 at least, hence eg mine is now 50 which correlates to 6.7% in 'old money'. If you ever see a youngish doctor or nurse, and they are all young in hospitals now - you'll only get the new number. BG meters still measure in mmol/L - but since the tests are totally different from each other, and measure something different, it does make better sense really to report results of them in different units.

I'll let T2s who should be more familiar with things like Abasaglar and a mixed insulin than I am, tell you about their experience of them.

What sort of meter readings are you getting each day?

Hi Jenny my reading fasting is 8 to 10 and meal time can be 13 or higher. Bed time seems worst sometimes I've gone to 17. Had an anxiety attack at work the other day. Felt so embarrassed. My hba1c was 96 says the can. So humulin m3 is on the list next week. Thank you so much for replying. It makes me feel that I am not alone. I am on forxia alogliptin and gliclizide. I am coming off them next week. Insulin for life is so drastic.

Sorry to hear you are having it so tough, Amerbit and I hope you have a good team around you. I am no expert on meds but it sounds like some sort of change is needed? I get confused with mmol and %s too. I was tracking the wrong thing for a while... felt a bit daft but hey, I'm learning...

What other strategies are you using to manage your diabetes?

I have to admit all this no carb and yes carb is all still confusing for me. I think I eat pretty well. I eat little and often due to acid reflux. I am 64.9kg, so not too overweight for being 53yrs.My DSN on this new humulin says I have to have some carbs with my meals so I can inject safely with no hypos. Enough of me I do hope you are well. T1 must be really tough for you, but you do sound like a tough cookie.

Sometimes changes in diet is not enough and it sounds positive (and safe) that they are reviewing everything with you.

Thanks Ruby. Ian glad I am not the only one who gets confused. O feel guilty tho. I have had T2 for 7yrs. Just overwhelming going on insulin. It's life changing. Hope you are doing okay. Just figuring out how to do this chat thing and how to follow someone.

Try not to give yourself a hard time, Amberbit. ... Today is as good a day as any to start afresh.

The forum has been a great learning place for me and people are very kind and helpful. Moving to insulin is life changing for many and I am hoping that the changes will be positive ones. That said, I don't underestimate the impact is has had on you.
