Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
hi I was diagnosed with T2 about 5-6 years ago, I’m on 2000 Metformin a day and nothing else. My levels are, I believe, under control - just been reviewed with “no change “ being the result - but am seriously considering the drastic 800 calorie a day diet that reverses diabetes. I suffer badly with my hands and feet, which most medics seem to write off as neuropathy, but my private podiatrist says it’s mechanical, and given all the wider pain I’m in, has suggested fibromyalgia or something similar, maybe magnesium related. Off to buy some Epsom salts today as apparently that helps? Any thoughts?

Hi Kayeffeff, welcome to the forum 🙂 Do you know what your HbA1c number was at your review? How long have you been experiencing the pain, does it pre-date the diabetes or is it something that has developed recently? Have the medics offered any help with pain relief? I'm afraid I can't offer any advice, but hopefully others will be along to share their experiences.

We have had a couple of members here in the past who have tried the 800 cal diet, with some success, but you may be able to improve things without going that far. Do you test your blood sugar levels before and after eating to see how your food choices affect you? Often, things we think of as 'healthy' can produce quite big increases in levels - it is a very individual thing and thought to be related to the unique gut bacteria we all carry.

Hi Kayfffeff...your podiatrist may be right...you can ask your GP for a referral to the musculoskeletal team at your local hospital...you could face a lengthy wait for a referral...however...it will give you some answers...in the meantime are you able to manage any kind of activity...one that isn't weight bearing on your joints...had similar problems myself...used to walk approximately 5-6 miles a day...halved the walking...I now use an exercise bike to keep my activity up...are you able to tell us what your diet consists of...many members here use the low carb high fat diet to control/mange their blood sugar levels...although that is not be suitable for everyone...I have followed that diet from shortly after my diagnosis with reasonable success...the magnesium...there is some research to suggest magnesium deficiency may make us less sensitive to insulin...possibly magnesium supplements would be beneficial for treating type 2 diabetes...however before you consider supplements... magnesium can be found in certain grains or green leafy vegetables and a host of other foods...you need to be cautious when considering a magnesium supplement...too much may cause nausea... vomiting or diarrhoea...wise to discuss using it with your GP/DSN first...if you can answer the points above...it may make it easier for other members to offer the right support/suggestions...good luck...keep us updated/

Hello Kayeffeff, welcome to the forum... 🙂 I'm gonna give SlimFast a whirl, but with whole milk not skimmed as I think that's a bit too drastic. Not quite sure how many calories I'd be taking in but I'm thinking low enough to make a difference. It'll be interesting to see what it does to bg levels.
