Hello newbie here on this forum. Just joined today. I have type 1 & have been a member of this lovely club since 1980 ,so 40 years now . Looking forward to chatting with you all especially in these not so normal times .

Hi and welcome from me too

How do you manage your diabetes? Are you on MDI or a pump? Do you have Freestyle Libre?
You will no doubt have seen a lot of changes since your diagnosis and perhaps appreciate the current technological advances even more as a result.

Hi yes seen so many advances in my lifetime. I am on a basal bolus regime. Only a few years ago I changed my total way of thinking when I went on a Dafne course . It was an amazing experience ...they say can't teach old dogs new tricks ,well they could with me ! No I don't have a freestyle libre by the way.

Hello. How did you come by that name? User names are fascinating. 🙂 I'm supposing you're not green, unless it's behind the ears, and are not a pirate?

Ha ha defo not green last time I looked . Its because of the ice hockey team I support are the pirates & our main colour is bright green🙂

Yes, DAFNE really is a great course. I am lucky in that I managed to get on it just 8 months after diagnosis, but this forum had given me a huge amount of basic info prior to the course so I had a bit of a head start with it.
If you are not aware of Freestyle Libre, it is a sensor which sticks to your arm for 14 days and you scan it to get readings instead of finger pricking which means that you can scan it 50 times a day if you like. It also plots your readings every few minutes even when you are not scanning, so you can see what is happening pretty much all the time, even whilst you sleep.... It makes getting your basal insulin doses right so much easier and helps you find the sweet spot for injecting bolus insulin prior to meals. Breakfast time for me is a particular problem as it takes NovoRapid anywhere from 30 mins to 75 mins to get going on a morning and my digestive system is very quick, so if I don't bolus far enough ahead my levels rocket and then plummet later. With Libre I can see when the insulin starts to hit my system and start eating breakfast then, so that they balance each other much better.
Libre is available on prescription if you fit certain criteria. I have been self funding for a few months which is expensive but getting it on prescription very soon and wouldn't be without it.

I still remember the impact of doing the DAFNE course. It was informative but also so good to spend a whole week with other people that had T1. They made things so much more realistic, rather than all the theory.
Glad that you have joined us and looking forward to your input.

Yes I found listening to other people's experiences was a great help on the course . The good times & the bad times & the funny moments we all have .

Avast and haul away me hearty! I thought I might’ve found a forum shipmate but twas not to be :D

Welcome to the forum 🙂

We’ve a fair few other long-term T1s on the boards, I’m a relative newcomer with not quite 30 years under my belt, but we have some medallists and some soon-to-be medallists 🙂

Ooh Ar etc - would that be the Hull Pirates?

@everydayupsanddowns - were you perchance 'Shakin' All Over' for that photo? Or your Johnny Depp impersonation?

It could well be trophywench 🙂 ,not that seen any on them since about March or any chance even the rest of this year the way things are going sadly.

Though neither of us participate in sport (well, not sport that most people do, cos we are boules/petanque players though that's not as rare as @Anitram's Smite LOL) we do love watching certain sports - amateur rugby & cricket in person when daughter and her family were playing, and certain ones on TV. We've just had the annual treat of Le Tour - lots of motorhomes missing though, weird.

Still called Molkky in France which is where we came across it - useful to have for folk who aren't 'strong i' the arm' enough to enjoy petanque.
