Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hey all,

I’m Annie, 28, been type one diabetic for most of my life and have always thought I have to fight this all alone. In the past year I’ve had massive set backs in my health due to years of poorly managed diabetes, and despite all my best efforts to get things under control they continue to deteriorate. I really can’t do this alone anymore, so I’m looking for other young(ish) T1 diabetics to share thoughts, feelings and frustrations with.

Anybody out there?

Hi anniex, welcome to then forum.

You’re never alone! This forum has lots of members of all ages with a variety of experiences you can call on. For support closer to home, DUK have a network of local support groups, you can find your nearest one at https://www.diabetes.org.uk/how_we_help/local_support_groups It is definitely worth checking this, but please be aware that a lot of them seem to be type 2 focused purely because their members tend to be, shall we say, a bit older. I’ll keep my fingers crossed that there is a group near you that suits your needs. Facebook is full of diabetes related pages, too. You might find something there.

Welcome to the forum Anne, from a T2 who's 4 1/2 years in.

Hi Annie and welcome

I understand the feeling of frustration and fear when things are not going right and you are really trying but not making progress. I am relatively new to diabetes and was diagnosed as Type 2 due to my age (55) but have now had testing for type 1 and awaiting results. I followed all the dietary and medicine advice pretty strictly and my HbA1c went up instead of down which was very disheartening, especially as it was lready dangerously high. The advice from members on the forum was instrumental in helping me get things more under control by eating low carb, as even with insulin my BGs are quite erratic. Cutting out carbs at breakfast time was key for me gaining control and I now have an omelette every day which really stabilises me, but you will need to use your glucose meter to test before and after meals to see which foods adversely affect you and what works for you. I know this is probably me trying to teach my granny how to suck eggs since you have had Diabetes for so much longer than me but sometimes you get so stuck in a routine because you are used to it that you forget to go back to basics when things go astray. Some days I feel like nothing is working but there will always be days like that when you have anomalies because there are so many factors which affect BG levels and you can only do your best and hope tomorrow is better.

You say that you have not managed your diabetes well, so now is the time to change that. Do you have a good Diabetes Health Care team? What insulin are you on? Have you tried innovations like pumps and CGM, which make managing it easier? Try to forget what has gone on before and start tomorrow with a clean slate and a new lifestyle and healthier regime of managing your diabetes. We are here to help and support you with that.

Best wishes

Barbara

Welcome to the forum @anniex .

I am glad that you have found this forum, where you will find lots of people who really ‘get it’ and you are definitely not alone. I have found people on here who have practical suggestions from their experience, rather than the theory which I found sometimes set ridiculous expectations. This sight is realistic and supportive.

Can you tell us how you manage your diabetes? Are you using Multiple Daily Injections or a pump?
There are people on here who manage with both systems who can offer advice. The changes that have happened over the last ten years are amazing and can help to improve control. Different equipment, different insulin’s can all help us

You are concerned that you do not seem to be able to get things under control. Do you have a supportive specialist team? It is worth asking their help as they may help you access different things to help you.

When trying to get things back in control it can be good to work on one thing at a time. I was encouraged to focus initially on getting my background insulin sorted first. I changed to a new insulin so that I could split this to two injections, morning and night, which enabled me to adjust one of them without effecting the other.

As I said you are not alone. Keep in touch and just ask any questions that you have.

Hi Annie and welcome to the forum, I turn 28 in November 🙂

I've not even been diagnosed 3 years yet but I've had my fair share of minor complications already 🙄

Feel free to send me a private message anytime 🙂
xx

Hello and welcome @anniex glad you've joined us 🙂

I think I'm still young-ish 😉 Diabetes can be really isolating and before the internet started - hhm perhaps I'm not quite as young as I think!- I felt completely on my own and had a really tough time through my teens, 20's and into my 30's. Diabetes is an around the clock challenge and the best thing I've done for my control and outlook on diabetes is to join this fabulous forum and talk to others who get what an exasperating unpredictable roller coaster it can be and read some of the ways they use to get better stability and control.

If you're ok to tell us what setbacks you're facing there's a lot of people on here who are facing complications and daily battles that diabetes can throw at us and we can hopefully help you along with things to get to a happier place.🙂 You are most definitely not alone in feeling as you do and being part of a forum helps so much 🙂
