Hello!

I was recently diagnosed diabetic (blood glucose of 38.4 at the hospital). I've been sent home with insulin and metformin.

I am just starting to learn about diabetes but I'm confused about diet (Maybe anxious) for example earlier today I did a finger prick that came out at 22 about 5 hours after lunch. So I'm before tea time looking for a snack (aa genuinely hungry) but I'm anxious that if I have any snack and then my tea I'll be really high blood sugar?

Any advice from you lovely people would be appreciated. Just st a bit of a loss as doctors etc are closed weekend!

Hello @1992ajb , welcome to the forum. Am I right in Thinking the 38.4 was this from a fingerpick sample rather than an Hb1ac blood sample from your arm ?

You have come to the right place for info and cyber support on diabetes. So feel free to ask any questions you have about diabetes .

For us to be able to give you the best advise a little more info would help.
How did you come to be diagnosed ie your symptoms.
What insulin(s) are you on.

Eggs cooked anyway you like are good, so how about an omelette a filling three egg one , perhaps with mushrooms , cheese or basically any thing else you would normally add to an omelette apart from potato.
Nuts make good snacks, look fir the lower carb ones, I adore Walnuts.

Hi 1992ajb, welcome to the forum 🙂 What insulin have you been given? How did your diagnosis come about? Try not to worry too much at the moment about seeing high numbers, particularly after eating, as things will take a little while to settle down and for you to get used to how well - ot otherwise- you tolerate your food choices. Be patient, you will start to see improvements before too long 🙂

I'd suggest having a read of Maggie Davey's letter to give you a good idea of how to approach things, and also Test,Review, Adjust by Alan S to give you an understanding of how to use your meter to discover your tolerances for the food choices you make - these can vary considerably from person to person. It is a learning experience, more of a 'marathon' than a sprint - you don't have to put everything right from the start. Remember that you need to develop an understanding and regime that is sustainable for you, rather than a 'quick fix' that you can't maintain longer term 🙂

Let us know if you have ANY questions - none are considered silly - and we will do our best to help 🙂

Hi Lin, the 38 was from a blood sample they ran. I've been out onto kwikpen 100units/ml and I'm taking 20 Units once daily. And on 500mg metformin once daily 🙂
