Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1.5 LADA
Hello everyone!
I just joined the forum tonight. I have just reached my first 15 years as type 1 last January.
Also Celiac and thyroid instability!
Look forward to talking to you guys, and to support if I can xx

Welcome to the forum

And welcome to the forum from me too @DiabetesLegacy23 as a fairly newbie to this Diabetes lark I
look forward to reading more from you in the future.

Welcome from me too and belated congratulations on your 15 Diaversary!

I have a mere 4 years under my belt but learnt almost everything I know from the wonderful people here on this forum. I hope you find it equally beneficial.

Is there anything particular which has drawn you to join the forum at this time or have you perhaps been one of our many "lurkers" who eventually come out into the open. Not that there is anything wrong with being a "lurker" as you can learn an awful lot from reading other peoples' posts, but always nice to get to know new people here who say "hello"

How do you manage your diabetes? MDI or pump? Which insulin(s) do you use and do you have Libre or other CGM?

Sounds like I am giving you a right grilling before your feet have even touched the ground, but feel free to ask plenty of questions of your own and if you fancy a social aspect to the forum, come and join us on the Group 7-day waking average thread" where we have dispensed with the average part of the title and just post our waking readings and any other info we want to share. It is very much like a drop in virtual coffee morning that can last all day....Features of particular interest are Colin's Cultural Corner and the latest culinary exploits of Elaine and Patti or House Specials, which is all really just a bit of nonsense that you will gradually get the hang of if you join us. It is a massively long thread so don't even think of trying to read right through it before you post, just jump in with your morning reading and you will soon get a feel for it and become part of the community. Don't worry if your waking readings are rubbish. We all go through that from time to time.
Below is a link to the thread if you fancy it, but no worries if you don't...

Look forward to hearing more from you.

I have been wanting to join for years, but never quite managed to do it. I have a medtronic 640 pump ( can't wait for the renewal to move to the new model), I have a guardian sensor and a half loop. I'm also a pharmacy technician by trade, work for the NHS and always dreamed of helping other diabetics out there. I am so passionate about coaching people on diabetes, I wrote training sessions for NHS staff (sad to see how little they know about it) and I coach people daily about it, anyone that will listen.
I am a keen volleyball player, coach it too, run a few times a week (although I'm not a very good one), I also love yoga, cooking and volunteer as a leader for girlguiding.
My blood sugars are generally well controlled, although I have just started Statins for the first time and it seems to be messing with my levels a little.
Diabetes and autoimmune diseases are a bit of a sad legacy in my family, hence my username (the 23 is not my age! )
I can't say I love being diabetic, but I try to make the most of my life everyday and my ultimate goal is to get to celebrate my 100th birthday one day!

Oh Wow! Sounds like you are going to be a real asset to the forum with your experience and enthusiasm for educating people.

A friend from my DAFNE course has just been upgraded from the 640 "half loop" system to the 780 closed loop and she says the difference is unbelievable. She has been tearing her hair out for a couple of years and just really struggling mentally, but now her TIR has improved enormously and she is so much happier. I hope you find a similar improvement.

Do you have other autoimmune yourself or are they shared out with other family members? My sister developed Polymyalgia Rheumatica not long after I was diagnosed with Type 1 so it looks like there may be an element of autoimmune in my family too. Still, there are worse things like Cancer, so I count my blessings. In fact in some respects my diabetes has caused me to become healthier so, whilst it is a pain in the backside.... sometimes literally since I use my buttocks for basal.... it has also lead to me improving my diet and being more proactive with exercise which I am pretty sure I wouldn't have done without the trigger of my diagnosis. We are also incredibly lucky to live in a time when the tech available to help us is so good, so no complaints here.

I look forward to reading more from and about you in the future.

I have type 1, coeliac, and had an hyperactive thyroid which is now underactive following radioactive treatment. My sister is also type 1, she has MS and an autoimmune disease that affects the liver (can't remember the name).
My dad passed away at the age of 45 from type 1 complications, so I always promised myself my kids will never witness the same.
I'm generally very healthy, cook everything from scratch and lots of vegetables and lower fat ingredients. Coeliac does help, as all the stuff available in the shops has too much sugar and no taste.

Welcome to the forum. I am just a few days ahead of you, reaching 15 years of T1 on 1 Feb this year.
I am using the 780 and Guaradian 4 sensor (lovely doing just one finger prick in a whole week most of the time), and enjoying looping. I self fund the sensors at present but it is well worth it with the positive impact of looping.

It sounds like you have a very positive approach to everything and I look forward to hearing more from you on here.

Thank you, looks like we almost have the same diabirthday! I've also been on the pump since 2013! I can't wait to move to the new pump next year! I was offered the sensor in 2021, and what a difference it has made! I used to have so many hypos in work, now rarely have one.

Welcome to the forum @DiabetesLegacy23

Glad to hear the MM640 has been working well for you - it was very good at catching hypos for me too (better than the tSlim for hypo-squashing tbh!

What have you got your eye on next?
