Newbie here. T2 diagnosed last week.....I think.

Hello, I have been having one health problem after another lately and after weeks of tests the doctor took my "fasting" blood sugar and he said it was diabetic (145 mg/Dl which i think is 8 mmol/L in the UK). Then last week i ask for the HbA1C (I am new to this and didn't know to ask for this the first day) and it was 6.5%. But strangely my 2 hour after eating reading is always about 105 to 120. but the doctor believes I have a digestive problem so this may be the reason for the strange readings. IDK. The doctor didnt actually confirm my diagnosis...but they are Thai doctors and they just said its high and that I need to get the blood sugar under control. In the final analysis I am either type 2 or a stones throw away from it. Either way I feel that I need to take action! I am just a week into learning about type 2 diabetes and thought it might be wise to join a community.

I hope its ok to join here because I am not in the UK. I am an american living in Bangkok but dont feel the american forums are probably right for me. In addition to being out of their system for over ten years there are very few foods, medicines, diet shakes, etc imported from america and most all of the english language imports are British leaning. Even "American" products are normally the British version. Also America sometimes seems slow to endorse treatments that dont involve big pharma.

Ive already read a lot of threads on here and just discovered this "Newcastle" diet. This looks very promising because I was 109 KG when diagnosed and believe the fat around the waist in the liver and kidney is probably the problem. Most food products, medicine, vitamins, etc that are sold in the UK are also available in Bangkok so I will look for the shakes used in this diet and consider following a version of this program to reverse/prevent my diabetes (or pre diabetes...whatever it is) from progressing. Right now Im just exploring options. If anyone has a good link that explains the program in depth or any good advice I would love to hear. im all ears. but it seems straightforward from the threads ive read. the jist of it is 800 calaries, 600 from the shakes and 200 from green vegetables. and 3 liters of water each day. Make adjustments for excercise. Any opinion on the best brand or shake to buy? Thanks

There are several people here who have done the Newcastle diet to good effect. I never did it, just cut out starchy foods such as potatoes, rice, pasta and bread. Since joining this forum I've discovered I should have reduced them gradually as cutting them out completely to start with can have adverse affects on your vision. Luckily this didn't happen to me!
I eat exactly what the rest of the family eats but with added leafy greens. I've got used to having curries and chilli with broccoli and green beans instead of rice and now actually prefer it.
I'm sure someone who has experience of the Newcastle diet will be along soon.

Your HbA1C at 6.5% (old units in the UK) converts to 48mmol/mol which is the threshold for a diabetes diagnosis so you are really onlt on the first rung of the ladder so some modest changes to your diet should have good results in getting down to normal below 42mmol/mol as you are not desperately high in terms of things.
Many do find that reducing carbohydrates a very effective way of reducing blood glucose but others have chosen other routes low calorie and similar. It is very individual what works.

Hi, I can recommend looking on the Newcastle University website for more information on the diet and also Roy Taylor's books or watch the five minute talk on youtube about it.
The gist of it, like you say, is to lose enough weight, the figure quoted is 15kg, which is 33 lbs, to allow you to get remission. I didn't follow the diet, as it wasn't offered in my area at the time, but did do 800 calories a day for three months. If you search on the forum for the diet, there's a fair few people who've tried it.

Thanks for your comment, ive only been reducing my carbs for about 10 days now but ive already noticed i feel ok at around 40 or 50 net carbs and my blood sugar levels seem to improve in that range. At 20 net carbs i dont feel well and have headaches and muscle pain. I have also been skipping Rice, Bread (most days), Pasta, Starchy Vegetables (potato) as well as some of the high sugar fruits. Its difficult but so far its doable. it seems easier to skip things like slices of bread, sandwiches, potatoes, and rice than foods like cottage cheese, dumplings, Taco shells, noodles in soups, fruits, spaghetti, lasanga, etc. Pasta and its wraps forms I suppose. those things get to me. haha

Just what I was looking for! Thank you! Yes, that should keep me busy for the next few weeks for sure. I can order books from amazon generally duty free so not an issue here.
