Newbie feeling confused and disheartened

In March 2025 I went to the Drs feeling a little dizzy, genuinely thought I could be anemic or something along those lines. Bloods were taken and it was confirmed after a hba1c test of 84 I was diabetic. This came as massive surprise as I didn’t have any classic symptoms and weigh 48kg and I am 5ft 4 with a bmi of about 18/19. Not having lost any weight prior to diagnosis. My mum got diagnosed as type 2 about 10 years ago at same height and weight. I am currently waiting on an antibody test but have been put on metformin on the meantime, it’s been 8 weeks since antibody test and I’m still waiting but I have the my diabetes my way app ( for patients in Scotland ) and over the weekend my app updated from not diagnosed to type 2. I don’t know if this is an official diagnosis or just based on my medication. I guess my post is just about me feeling confused that this app could be confirming a type 2 diagnosis. I feel disheartened to be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes when I live an active healthy lifestyle prior to diagnosis. Just looking to vent a little here and hopefully find some people who understand the frustrations.

It can take a little while for antibody checks to come back, and you aren’t the first forum member who has had to wait quite a long time to get their results. :(

I’m not based in Scotland, so haven’t used My Diabetes My Way, but I’d be rather surprised if the flagging with T2 wasn’t simply an app-update thing (changes in the way records are stored in the app perhaps?).

I don’t think I’d take this as any kind of confirmation quite yet? Hopefully it won’t be too long before your results come back, and you can discuss them with your Dr.
 
Hi @HeatherC92 and welcome to the forum - sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis - 8 weeks is a long time for an antibody test to come back (it's usually about a month) - I wouldn't assume the negative antibody result and/or this is why the app has updated - worth a call to the doctor to see if the actual results have come back yet
 
Welcome to the forum and I hope it will be of some help to you to read of other people's experience and look at some of the links.
Often people feel they eat healthily but your HbA1C results points to the fact that your metabolism is struggling to cope with the amount of carbohydrates in your diet, people sometimes thing that is just sugar and sugary drinks and foods but it is all carbohydrates even those we have been told are healthy choices. If you do turn out to be Type 2 then along with the medication then diet is the key but normally reducing carbs results in weight loss which to be fair many do need to do. So for yourself where you really don't need or want to lose weight then increasing protein and healthy fats would be a good plan as part of the carb reduction.

Hi @HeatherC92 welcome to the forums and I hope you get your diagnosis resolved sooner rather than later.
Like you I was diagnosed with a HbA1c higher than 80 even though I had a healthy BMI and wasn't overweight. The diagnosis was a shock and I have been on a learning curve ever since, with lots of support from the people on the forum.
Unlike you I have a very good understanding of the cause of my diabetes type 2 even though I was active (ran every week, walked a lot, cycled, etc.) but I realised very quickly that looking at the past and "why" is irrelevant as the only thing I can influence now is the future.
If your diagnosis confirms you are type 2, than as Leadinglights says, reducing your carbs (especially potatoes, rice, bread and pasta) will help but you need to make sure that you keep your calorie intake at a level to support your lifestyle to avoid losing weight which may mean increasing the amount of protein and fats you eat. However, you need to manage the increase in fats as the wrong type (saturates) can impact your cholestrol.
All that said, rant away as we all need to do that from time to time just to maintain our equilibrium.
