Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi all

I was recently diagnosed (they think type 2 but they're rechecking) as I started to lose my vision, apparently my eye linings thickened as I've been diabetic for some period of time without knowing. I'm now on Metformin and Humilin - I injections twice a day and my eye sight is coming back very slowly - I'm hoping it will return fully?.

I'm now experiencing days where I feel sick, almost flu-like and according to my wife look grey and my skin is also starting to become very dry and itchy.

Are these normal for sufferers, or are these things I should talk through with my doctor?

Thanks

Rusco

Hi @Rusco welcome to the forum! I've heard the side effects of Metformin can be really intense :( I wonder if anybody who has experienced similar symptoms has any advice for you?

Hi Rusco, welcome to the forum 🙂 The problems with your eyesight will most probably have been due to high levels of blood glucose whilst you were undiagnosed. Now you are on medication, particularly the Humulin, your levels will be reducing and this will lead to a gradual improvement in your eyesight levels - many people experience this after or around diagnosis. For me it took 2-3 weeks to get back to where it was 🙂 Don't go having any expensive glasses made until they recover otherwise they might end up useless!

The dry, itchy skin can also be common as high blood glucose levels can leave to a little dehydrated - make sure you are getting plenty of water 🙂 It's all quite a shock to the system, and your body is now adapting to the new situation - prior to your diagnosis you had probably become accustomed to a large extent to those higher levels, but now you are receiving treatment it's having to get used to better levels 🙂

Welcome Rusco, my eyesight wobbling was the final symptom that pushed me to get a diagnosis, I’m pleased to say it is now back to normal 🙂 I hope you continue to improve and that the nausea stops :(

Thanks everyone, losing my sight was scary and I’m hoping it starts to improve

Hi ever1 I just signed up today
I've been Diabetic for 14yrs

Thanks everyone, losing my sight was scary and I’m hoping it starts to improve
Mine went blurry virtually overnight a few weeks ago once I started the Metformin . Apparently according to my gp is because I've been so used to running on high octane fuel (glucose levels over 20) when I started to come down my eyes werent used to it. I couldn't even see my phone. However 6 weeks later they're coming back to normal but I did go to opticians to get everything checked out. If was scary as it was literally overnight my eyes went blurry. Now got glasses as my distance vision isn't good but that's not connected with the diabetes.
