Hi everyone

I am the mum of a 13 year boy who has just been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.

We have the Libre 2 BG monitor and are maybe looking into an Apple Watch. My son currently has an iPhone 13. We have had a few issues with connectivity and the app dropping out frequently already.

I have read varying results in terms of using an Apple Watch but believe you still have to have the iPhone in close proximity (is this correct?) and that a third party app has to be downloaded to use the watch to be able to monitor the BG ie shuggah?

If anyone can offer any advise - for example if they have experienced signal drop outs, the proximity the watch has to be to the phone, Apple Watch - which one, best accurate app etc, I would be really grateful.

Many thanks

Hi @Victoria1974 - I use an android phone and a galaxy watch so can't specifically help, but the following is from the "Libre Geeks" facebook group regarding Apple watches (Apologies for the long reply!):

Apple Watch links for Libre 2/3 data.

To have glucose data on your Apple Watch you have two major options - use a third party app to communicate with the sensor, or follow yourself via the LibreLinkUp infrastructure, with Librelink / Libre 2 / Libre 3 app talking to the sensor and Libreview.com

Additional encryption / security on Libre sensors in the US/Canada/Australia/New Zealand mean that currently there are no 3rd party iOS apps that can receive data from these sensors via Bluetooth.

3rd party apps are not easy on iPhone, the app Shuggah is a re-release of xDrip4iOS and is the only one in the app store

This app replaces Librelink etc which need to have their Bluetooth diabled to avoid conflict.

https://xdrip4ios.readthedocs.io/en/latest/ and https://www.facebook.com/groups/853994615056838 for help.

xDrip4iOS and other apps like Spike or Glucose Direct may be available if installed via Testflight or other developer routes :-

https://spike-app.com/ https://www.facebook.com/groups/spikeapp/
https://github.com/creepymonster/GlucoseDirect https://www.facebook.com/groups/4747621411996068/

With one of the above your Glucose value should be available locally on your Apple Watch or anything that displays an Apple Calendar.
https://xdrip4ios.readthedocs.io/en/latest/configure/applewatch/ describes a watch app and the calendar complication method.

If you wish to stick with the official solution you can use Librelink 2.10 or the Libre 3 app to stream values to LibreLinkUp and then invite yourself via "Connected apps" to follow this data over the internet. Obviously this requires services from LibrelinkUp and an internet data connection to work.

Gluroo can provide a lock screen reading on the iPhone https://gluroo.com/support/ios-lock-screen-widget-blood-glucose/

I am linked to the Libre app so receive the notifications but am concerned about replacing the Libre link for another app and connectivity issues as this is all still very new.

I will speak with our diabetes specialist and get their thoughts also.

Thank you for your response and the information given.

I use iPhone 13 mini and an old Apple Watch with Glucowatch installed which is free. The watchface updates every 15 minutes ish and you just tap it for another update. You need internet connection and for the phone to be with you for it to work

Use something like Glucowatch then, it just follows libre in the same way you do. The readings still go to libreview for your team, the watch is just an extra follower

I don’t use Glucowatch myself as my sensor is Dexcom G7. But, this link looks like it could be very useful in setting this up:

3rd party apps are not easy on iPhone, the app Shuggah is a re-release of xDrip4iOS and is the only one in the app store
The authors of xDrip4iOS are (or were) annoyed by the new publishers of Shuggah who'd started charging (there was apparently an agreement with the original developers of Shuggah not to do this). Something like that, anyway. I don't know whether that disagreement has been resolved.

Apparently there is a Shuggo app.

I use iPhone 13 with Apple Watch SE and Sweet Dreams app - works in a similar way to Glucowatch. Pretty easy to set up and the developers are very helpful.

Good luck getting this set up @Victoria1974

Extra coolness points for a cyborg 13yo with a glanceable wrist display. It’s like living in a sci-fi movie!
