Can you do eggs? Do you like avocado? If you get some low carb bread then this will expand your breakfast options. I find these are very low carb. Alternate between avocado and toast with salad cream and poached eggs on toast for breakfast mostly, with full on cooked breakfast sometimes. Fruit? For me it’s either small portion or strawberries, raspberries or Mellon, often miss lunch now as this is enough to Cary me through the day.
Yes, I like eggs, but not too many in a week as I find them constipating. However, I’m afraid I don’t like avocado, and I don’t eat breakfast. But I sometimes have eggs them for tea, and if using bread it’s always wholemeal medium sliced brown. I only eat 2 meals a day, my main one around 12:30 pm and then a small snack around 5:00 pm. The fruits I eat, (mostly frozen), are strawberries, raspberries, melon, cherries, mangos, bananas, grapes, pears and nectarines or peaches.

The bananas, mangos and grapes might cause an issue @kithra They’re all higher in carbs than the berries. I’m Type 1 so on insulin, but I find bananas particularly carby for the size.

Thank you. Yes, I knew that mango and grapes were higher than the others, so I only have a very small serving from time to time. As for the bananas I eat small ones as I need potassium for my high blood pressure.

There are many low carb food alternatives which will give you potassium.

I'll have to Google to find them, and hope I like some of them.

Maybe repeating what many have said but I have been advised (and seems to work for me) to try and stick to berries of most types, apples are ok in moderation (greener the better). "5 a day" should be more veg than fruit.

Stay away from bananas (especially ripe ones), peaches, apricots, grapes, saltanas & raisins.

Note, I am posting from experience and advice given by professionals, but do your own research as to what is best for your personal situation. 🙂

Cheers.

I find apricots OK in moderation, much like apples and plums and kiwi fruit. 1 apricot is about 5g carbs either fresh or dried, but I only eat one at a time or a half if it is one of my home grown apricots because they are huge! On the rare occasion I have a banana and it is about twice a year, I have half one day and the other half the next. If I do a really long exertive hike I might be really lucky and get to eat a whole one but the last time I tried that I carried it all day and levels never dropped so I didn't get to eat it and banana was brown at the end of the day! Tried fruit is more portable for such occasions and keeps till the next time if you don't need it.

I was diagnosed about six months ago while undergoing a lot of other medical issues, so I sympathise with feeling confused and overwhelmed. Given all the other issues, the last thing I wanted was to cut out all the food stuff I enjoy (carbs are my downfall). I ordered a free Libre Trial here https://www.freestyle.abbott/uk-en/products/freestyle-libre-2.html
This works to monitor glucose 24/7 for two weeks, and helped me identify what I could and couldn’t eat. After this I was able to settle on a diet which suited me. As folks are saying in other posts, we respond very differently, so it can be good to understand what you tolerate and what you don’t. Good luck with it.

Like you I too loved my carbs but I’ve cut right down now, hard as it’s been. In fact, after a lot of research, I’ve changed my diet completely. I took a look at the Libre Trial but I’m afraid that at the moment it’s just too expensive for me to buy. One of the most helpful suggestions I’ve received has been the Carbs and Cals book along with the flashcards. And I’ve invested in some good kitchen scales so I can weight everything. I’m sure it won’t be too long before I understand what I can, and can’t, tolerate. Good luck to you too, and thank you.
