'Under the skin' blood-testing device developed

Scientists say they have developed a tiny blood-testing device that sits under the skin and gives instant results via a mobile phone.

The Swiss team say the wireless prototype - half an inch (14mm) long - can simultaneously check for up to five different substances in the blood.

The readings are then beamed to the doctor, using Bluetooth technology.

The device's developers hope it will be available to patients within four years.

It is designed to be inserted, using a needle, into the interstitial tissue just beneath the skin of the abdomen, legs or arms. And it could remain there for months before needing to be replaced or removed.

Sounds promising!

I was with you right up to 'before needing to be removed' which sounded a bit icky. 😱

Sounds very big brother to me. Thanks but no thanks.

At the end of the day, Bluetooth works with a range of about 10m so you'd have to be in the room with the doc for them to access the results, I think the "beamed to the doctor" comment was meant to describe it in a hospital situation like an ICU where they want to test it next.

call me old fashioned, but I don't like the look of it and don't think I would want one/trust it

I'd be happy with it except I'd want the results, not have them sent to my GP who couldn't do much about a hypo if I was having one.

I would love it, so long as it linked with my pump and I could see the results on that. I wonder if there is a way of volunteering for a trial?

Presumably, you'd have the results recorded on your phone/app. But I agree, I have no confidence in Dr Idiot and there isn't much she could do but read the data from a safe distance.

Well I've commented elsewhere that it looks like it's more to be used in a hospital situation at the moment - ICU was mentioned - if you ARE that ill and they keep coming to take blood and test for this that and the other it's a PITA so I think it's great if it helps that along so they don't have to wake you up every 5 minutes.

And I also commented that disposable syringes were originally ONLY for hospital etc use - and look how far we've come since then!

Personaly i'd love one if they got so good they could replace my b/g meter, one less thing to carry around, oh i do look forward to the future, what exciting times we live in🙂
