Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello I’m Em and I found yesterday I have type 2. My GP wanted to start me on medication but I asked if I could have 6 months to try to lose weight and change eating etc. I’ve had 6 major ops in 5 years and gained a ridiculous amount of weight. My liver is enlarged too so I need to get this turned around. I’ve started slim fast this morning as I have done this before to help me start to lose weight successfully before all my surgery.
I’ve woken this morning knowing I have to get myself together so already been for a walk and attacked my housework.

I’m going to take a look through the threads and hopefully find lots of information that will help me.

I was 51 on the Hba1c so gp said I’m not too bad? I’ve sort of u derstood what she means and she sent me links to lots of info too.

thanks for reading.

Welcome @EmsJT 🙂 You sound very positive and that’s half the battle. You’ve also identified where you can make changes, and with an HbA1C of 51 (just into the diabetic range) you should be able to turn things round pretty quickly.

Thanks ive been on a rough journey the last few years so this feels although shocking almost inevitable with the weight gain.
Already finding lots of good advice on here which is great.
Will be purchasing a monitor now so I can truly understand how my levels work.
Thanks for replying.

Buying a monitor is a great idea 🙂 It definitely sounds like you’ve had a difficult time - 6 ops in 5 years sounds a lot physically and emotionally. I hope you’re feeling better in yourself now.

Don’t be afraid to ask whatever questions you want here. Nothing is too trivial and nothing is ‘silly’.

Welcome to the forum @EmsJT

Good to hear you have leapt into action to tackle your diabetes head on!

With an HbA1c of 51 it does sound like a few tweaks and changes might be enough to turn things around for you.

Sorry to hear about the weight gain following all those operations :( It will really help improve your insulin sensitivity to lose some of those excess pounds.

Good to hear you’ve got yourself a BG meter too 🙂

Don’t worry if the numbers themselves are a little higher than you’d like to begin with - aiming for rises of no more than 2-3mmol/L by 2hrs after meals will allow your average levels to reduce gradually 🙂

Thank you I panicked with a reading of 8.6 this morning on waking as didn’t realise the stored insulin released in the night.

Stored glucose 🙂

8.6 is little high, but not worth having anxiety over if your addressing it and are not on any form of medication. When I was first diagnosed I was getting readings of 18 as a fasting result and per my latest diabetic screening, I have suffered no noticeable damage to organs, eyes, nerves etc yet, but caveat that with the statement everyone is different.

Here is a link to ideal levels, obviously your morning one is fasting which isn't actually provided by NICE per this chart (anyone know why? Guessing it's because it varies so much?)
