Welcome to the forum, I'm sure you will find it helpful. If you are willing to share a bit of information about your diagnosis, what Your HbA1C is and if you are on any medication it will help people to tailor their advice to your situation.
A good start would be to look at the Learning Zone and read through at your own pace, you will find some links for newly diagnosed.
There is a lot to take in to start with but feel free to ask any questions and people will do their best to help.
People find it helpful to keep a food diary of everything you eat and drink then there is a starting point from where you can make some dietary changes.
It is your intake of all carbohydrates that is going to be the thing to be careful of.
The book or app Carbs and Cals is really useful to help make good food choices as it has the carb value of lots of foods and meals, It really is my bible.

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, but glad you have found the forum so soon!

One of the biggest questions when trying to get to grips with your diabetes is often ‘what can I eat’ and while there are obvious things like cakes, biscuits, sweets and sugary drinks that you will want to cut out straight away, you might be surprised how much *all* carbohydrate affects your BG levels, including rice, pasta, potatoes, bread, pastry, grains, cereals and many fruits.

Many new members find it can be really helpful to keep a brutally honest food diary for a week or two. Note down everything you eat and drink. It can be especially helpful to estimate the amount of total carbohydrate (not just ‘of which sugars’) in the meals and snacks to give you an idea of which foods are the main sources of carbs in your menu. This might also help identify some meals which would be fairly easy to tweak or swap to reduce their impact on your BGs.

If you‘d like a bit of background to go alongside the Learning Zone, members here frequently recommend Maggie Davey’s Letter and Gretchen Becker’s book T2 Diabetes, the first year, which you can work through gradually and refer back to as and when you need to.

Hello and welcome
The other posts have covered most things. Just a suggestion - I record my daily food and drink intake through a website with app. It cuts out all the hard work of calculating the carbs. You will need to weigh everything, and I find it easiest to keep digital scales and a clear bowl on my worktop. Best wishes

Wow your recovery is amazing. Ok so I was diagnosed a week ago. Go wanted me to take medication. 55 is the blood sugar results. In the last 7 days I started at 20 stone 7 and have reduced to 20,1. Eating low carb foods. With one sugary dessert at Sunday lunch. I bought a finger prick monitor and started at 10.1 a and have reduced up to yesterday to 6.1 at end of day. Only to wake this morning to 8.1 after fasting since last result which was taken. 2 hours after my dinner. This put me off track and today I had an ice cream lolly and back at 10.1. Is this normal?
 
It is brilliant you have a monitor so that is a really good start. 55 is not tremendously high not to be able to change your diet and hopefully get it down.
Many people use their monitor as a strategy for testing what food/meals they can tolerate by testing before they eat and after 2 hours hoping for no more than 2-3mmol/l increase and no more than 8.5mmol/l if so the meal was too carb heavy.
As for are those results normal depends on when you tested. 6.1mmol/l 2 hours after dinner looks good. The morning result of 8.1 is probably what people will see early in their journey and is often the last to come down to the 6 ish you want to aim at.
 
I can only echo what @Leadinglights has said. Great progress on the weight. That's nearly half a stone!
