Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi all.
I would like to start by saying I am 63
I have permanent AFIB.( take meds for it)
Also no gallbladder, but don't suffer like some with fat eat as much as I allways.
I have been pre diabetes for last year at 48.
In August my doctor said try and control it.
I was drinking lots of smoothies as he advised me to stay of tea which I drank black no sugar.never used to drink coffee.
He suggested drinking milk all time.
Which I did by Oct my next blood test was 70 and told I had diabetes .
I read that milk was good for type 2 diabetes.
So even though I haven't drunk it for years I started upping drinking about 10 pints a week.
Rest of my diet as been same I do eat more protein then carbs.
I am chef and know about all sugars etc.
I was given staglipin each day.
But went back today and they have not been working and changed to Trajenta and gliclazide.
I did a reading on my finger one and got 17.8 now never had readings this high.
As anyone else had this kind of problem from drinking milk.
I am going to stop milk all together and see what happens even though doctor said it carnt be that that's pushed it up.
But I carnt see anything else that can have done it.
Hope someone on here as some advice for me.
Oh and I have had no other symptoms no thirst or peeing constantly, eyes been checked feet been checked
Many thanks.

What's your thyroid doing - is that being checked regularly?

Welcome @Davred, sound like you have a lot going on! Personally I don’t tolerate milk at all so tend to avoid it.

Hi @Davred welcome to the forum.🙂 Milk, I think quite a few of us react to it, my Blood Sugars would be calling an ambulance if it was me drinking what you are. Take care.

Hi.
Well first day without it any at all, and my finger reading down to. 9.5 and 9.8.
If it's milk that is causing it then doctors have it wrong.
Anyway only time will tell carnt see it being new tablets only had my first this morning.
Thanks and hope I get mine down to like yours 38.

Hello @Davred and welcome 🙂

Milk has a fair amount of carbohydrate in it, I'm not surprised your blood sugar went so high drinking that much, or that it's come down since you've stopped. I can see why your doctor might have thought it was better for you than smoothies, which have a lot more carbs and would not only send your blood sugar up higher but also send it up faster, but it's not a great alternative, all the same.

Oh great - another GP pushing someone into high blood glucose with bad advice.
Tea is fine as long as you don't make it super strong - with no milk or sugar it is a carb free fluid - great if you are on the edge of diabetes.
Smoothies are usually high carb, and it is so easily digested as it is pulverised before drinking.
Milk is about 25 gm of carbs per pint - an extra 35 gm of carbs a day - the equivalent of my whole day's allowance at the moment.
If you drop those high carb foods then you should see your blood glucose numbers drop rapidly too - but with those medications you will need to be careful and test after meals as low carb can mean hypos.
