Thanks again for all your reassurances, it will take time for him and us. He just seems to be getting with it. We are still at the stage of the Dietitians setting the insulin levels, but they have asked us if we want to get to the carb / insulin ratio. We have said not just yet. Maybe in a week or 2.

I am fearful for his health and complications, but with what you have all said and with experiences shared I am feeling a little better🙂

I guess we will never stop worrying but not showing it. But It certainly sounds like normal opportunities are there. Especially in the army, police etc. I know am jumping too far ahead and should think day by day. But you all know what we are going through, thanks a lot.

He is using 12 hour Levemir and then novo rapid .

Boabster, when you feel ready to start carb counting, I recommend you get a copy of the book "Carbs and Cals" (also available as a Smartphone app - same name) - this has photographs of all kinds of different foods and meals, with different portion sizes and the carbs they contain. It's very useful for eating out, when you don't know the exact ingredients or have the packaging and nutritional info.

For school, my son prefers to take packed lunches, so I put a note in his lunchbox with the carb count of the food on it. But if he wanted to have hot meals in the canteen, the school caterers can provide me with a nutritional breakdown of their menu. He also has a medical card given to him by the school's Inclusion Coordinator which would allow him to jump the queue at lunchtime if he was buying a hot meal.

Inclusion Coordinator?? Blimey I didn't know there were such things! My daughter says her face is her lunch pass - she has a full care plan at school which states that she must eat within 10 minutes of taking her insulin, and there is an agreement in place that she does the insulin in the classroom and then is allowed to jump the queue into the dinner hall, taking one friend with her. It had always surprised me that they have never given my daughter some kind of ID; anyone who is in a lunch time club or is a playground helper etc has to show an early lunch pass. My daughter just walks straight to the door and they let her in. When she first went up to the juniors last autumn I think she had a bit of trouble getting in when the dinner ladies didn't know her; the class teacher soon sorted that out though! (he's 6' 6" tall, a very gentle giant but if you didn't know him you probably wouldn't argue :D)

Sally, the Inclusion Coordinator or InCo is the new name for a Senco 🙂

You'll find at secondary (unless it's a very small school) that many staff won't know your child, and despite posters on the staff room wall, won't know they have type 1 either!

Thanks Redkite, she is still at Primary school so that's the difference. Don't have to worry about Secondary school for another 3 years - that will come round all too quickly though!
