Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi I was just newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes I will start my insulin journey in just over a week I feel totally overwhelmed with everything is this normal ?? Any advise for a newbie ??

Totally normal to be overwhelmed...would be a bit odd if you weren’t.

My advice would be trawl through posts on this forum, badger us with lots of questions however small or silly they seem and your DSN too...presuming you are under the care of a hospital team and not gp, they are there to help.

There’s a very good book that’s worth having. Type 1 Diabetes in children Adolescents & Young People, by Ragnar Hanas. Don’t be put off by the title, it’s full of information for all type 1s.

Easy to say don’t panic, it’s only natural, it’s a big learning curve, there’s a lot to get your head around. It will soon become your new normal and you will soon toddle along with life just the same as you always have done, just a little more thought will go into your day.

Oh and don’t listen to people who want to tell you scare stories, they generally don’t know what they’re talking about.

Welcome, by the way🙂

Thanks so much I have definitely heard some scary stories already which really made me panic but I know it’s all new I was only told yesterday after thinking it was type 2 for the past 6 weeks so I had it in my head I was going to beat it with diet and meds but slightly different train of thought now ! But I will have a look for that book thanks for the info any tips before I see the insulin lady next week ??

There’s a phrase often quoted on here...”well controlled diabetes is the cause of.....absolutely nothing”.🙂

Good luck 🙂 Stacks of info here for you.

Hi and welcome from me too.
I am in a similar situation to you but still waiting for testing to establish/confirm if I am Type 1. I had 6 weeks of oral medication and strict diet and lost 1.5 stone to bring me into the normal BMI range but my HbA1c reading went up from 112 to 114 which was a real kick in the teeth as I was mentally committed to reversing the Type 2 diagnosis.
I was gutted to be told I needed insulin and I have now been using it for nearly a month..... it has been a real rollercoaster, but with the help of the wonderful people on this forum, I am at last getting there. I had nearly 3 days of mostly normal range BG readings over the Easter weekend...... I was very well behaved though even when everyone else was indulging. Unfortunately I have had a wobble since then but getting it under control again now. I have found that whilst they told me to eat normally, I could not manage to balance my levels whilst doing so and I now follow a low carb diet and have just one small portion of starchy food a day (usually on an evening) and this works for me.

Have you got a Blood Glucose meter yet? Testing is so important to figure out which foods cause you problems. Bread, pasta, potatoes, rice and porridge are major problems for me, even wholemeal versions and will spike me for 8-10 hrs, even with insulin..... but one unit too much insulin sends my BG plummeting, so it is a fine balance and regular testing is the only way to figure it out.

Good luck with it and don't be frightened to ask lots of questions.... Knowledge is power!

Welcome to the forum @Newbie12

Sorry to hear of your diagnosis but pleased that you have found this forum. There is plenty of support and information available on here. Do ask any questions that you have.

I read on here the analogy of learning to manage T1 Diabetes to learning to drive. I know when I started driving it seemed complicated to steer, look in the mirror, and change gear!! Now it is just automatic, and I do all that without much thought. My focus is watching for the unusual, and dealing with unexpected. So it is with Diabetes. Most of it is just my new ‘normal’, and the rest is sorting out the hiccoughs when they arise.

Plenty of people here to help with any questions. I know that I have learnt most of what I know about managing my condition from others on here.

You are in the right place @newbie 12, a lot of very experienced members on the forum. Welcome to our family,🙂 we all know how you feel done that got the T-shirt, ask away any question. Please keep us informed of any updates only too glad to help.

Hi and welcome 🙂 it's such a big life adjustment, but you will get there. Try to remember it is a marathon, not a sprint. No question is too daft, fellow forum members will try to help you as much as possible.

I'm one of the rarities that was not knocked by the news last Sept/Oct and actually welcomed it... Ah, I best explain why... I have been dealing with my daughter's T1D since 2015 so I was already trained and experience by 2018 at my diagnosis. I also saw this as a way to truly understand my daughter situation and a reason to not be upset by it, as if a now 4 year old can deal with it so can I.

Also as a T1D, free prescription guaranteed! Just make sure you get your GP to sort your medical exemption certificate, as I wasn't aware of this and the phamancy grilled me about it. Doesn't work at the dentist though after trying my luck...

Must admit my health has actually improved as at a better weight now, 13st 6lbs to a steady 12st 4lbs!

There will be so many options in the future to help you; pumps, meters, CGMs, apps etc so you'll find something to ease this for you. Just remember there's a lot of us and plenty of support!

And in the immortal words of Frank Sinatra "That's Life"
