Relationship to Diabetes
Hello and Good Afternoon, I'm not a Diabetic, but I look after my partner who is a type1 Diabetic, and have been together for over 8 years.

Hi David, welcome to the forum 🙂 How long has your partner been diagnosed, and how are things going for her? Please feel free to ask any questions you might have 🙂

Might be a male partner, Northerner?

Hi dave. Welcome to forum

Hi Dave and welcome to the mad house...... sorry I mean forum! :D

Welcome. You don't have to be mad, but it helps:D

Hi and welcome to the forum :D

Hello to all, Sorry for the late reply, I have been busy the last few days, and to answer 2 of the replies left me, [ 1 ] my partner has been a type1 diabetic for 40 years, and has been a type1 since the age of 11, [ 2 ] My partners name is Sarah, ( so she's a female ) lol, She is 51, and I'm 54, We live in Swindon, Wiltshire, I knew nothing at all about type1 or type2, and didn't have a clue to what being a Diabetic was, over the last 8 years, I've learnt a lot from my partner about being a type1 diabetic, it's been a learning curve for me. In the 8 years of being together, we have discovered that Sarah suffers with low blood pressure, and has developed Addisons disease, through being a long term Diabetic. Sarah has recently gone on to an Insulin pump, ( in October 2015 ), she is getting on very well with it, at the moment the pump she has is a trial one, Sarah gets a brand new pump, ( Upgrade ) in 2 weeks time, the new pump is even better and up to date. When Sarah gets her new Insulin pump, she will have to make regular visits to the Hospital, to have it tweaked ( adjusted ) to get the Insulin intake accurate. The Insulin pump gives Sarah back her freedom, and she's able to do the things that she enjoys doing most, eg: Gardening, walking the dog, horse riding and swimming etc, so the future is looking bright for Sarah. Thank you to all that replied, I will answer any questions you may have, if I can, and look forward to hearing from you.... Dave.

Hi Dave and welcome to the forum. It sounds like you both are handling things well. Addison's is another autoimmune disease as is Type 1 - these conditions being autoimmune are often associated. (I'm having the test for Addison's in a week - and hoping it's negative 🙂).

Pumps definitely are the way to go. I'm still using pens on MDI and do sometimes feel slightly constrained by that - particularly with things like unplanned exercise, more of an annoyance than a showstopper but a pump in acting more like a pancreas should give easier, better and smoother control. Good luck to you both and let us know how you're getting on. 🙂
