Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
hello can anyone help me, I was diagnosed a few years ago with type 2 diabetes and i thought i was handling it quite well. A little confused as you dont seem to get any proper advice, I have been taking metformin and now the nurse has prescribed a statin as well as one called jardenience. i have been taking the additional two since feb again no problems, the weight has been coming off nicely. i had a blood test last week and she has said she is concerned about the glucose in my blood, she never said whether it was high or low. she has given me a pen to do my own. Last night my reading was 5.4 this morning it 3.1 and just before eating my lunch i tested again and it had dropped to 1.6. what am i doing wrong.

When you say she has given you a pen to do your own.... what do you mean? Is it a finger pricker/lancing device and BG meter with test strips or an injection pen? If it is a meter, what is the make of it and are you using the correct strips for it. Is there an expiry date on the pot the strips are in? Is there a control solution in the kit for you to check that the strips are correctly calibrated. Are your hand dry when you test?
How do you feel with these low readings?
If the 1.6 reading is actually correct, I would expect you to be very close to passing out and struggling to coordinate your hands or think straight or see properly. You would likely be shaking and possibly sweating and feeling very unwell indeed, which you don't mention so I am inclined to think there is something amiss with the meter or your technique in using it.

HI @chippy how were you feeling when you recorded 1.6? As @rebrascora has said a level that low would leave most people feeling very unwell and is actually quite worrying if accurate. It is possible to have hypos when taking Metformin with Jardiance, did your nurse talk to you about hypo symptoms and how to treat them when you began the new medication?

Excise my rudeness.... I have just realised that you are new to the site so "Welcome" should have been my first response!
I hope you find the knowledge and experience of the members of this forum as hugely beneficial as I have over the past year and a bit.
Look forward to hearing more from you and hopefully clarifying that this is some sort of error reading because otherwise I think you need to ease back on the medication and speak to your nurse first thing on Monday.

Hello and welcome to the forum @chippy 🙂

Welcome to the forum @chippy

Those low levels do sound worrying - and even if the 1.6 was a slightly duff strip, it sounds like you are having some readings at or near the hypoglycaemic range.

Do you drive? And have you been instructed to inform the DVLA - I don’t know much about jardiance, but it sounds as if it is the sort of medication the DVLA need to know about.

Hopefully you can speak to your nurse tomorrow and adjust your medications and get some clarity on how to manage things going forwards.
