Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello everyone , I'm new to the site I'm a 41 year old man from Birmingham , I've had diabetes for two year it started as type 1 now there saying it's between 1&2 . I'd like to make a few friends on here so I don't feel so alone . 🙂

Hi Darren

I'm 25 had D for 1.5 years and am also an inbetweenie.

What insulins are you on?

Hi Darren, welcome to the forum 🙂 There are quite a lot of people here who are uncertain about their diagnosis - usually adults are presumed to be Type 2 because of their age. However, what can happen is that adults can get something called LADA (Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adulthood), also known as Type 1.5. This has the same origins as Type 1, but comes on more slowly. Are you currently on insulin? If so, what regime? How were you originally diagnosed, and what made them change their minds?

You're certainly not alone any more, there are lots of people who have been in your shoes, so if you have any questions then please do ask and we will try our best to help you out! 🙂

Hello fello Brummie (Kind of) - Welcome to the forum 🙂

Hello Darren. I was originally diagnosed as T2 but that was changed to LADA/1.5 later. We're an odd bunch but there are quite a few of us in here. What made them change your diagnosis?

Hi we're brummies too-where abouts are you?-and welcome

Welcome to the forum Darren 🙂

I Wondered if anyone has lost lots of weight like me I'm dangerously thin and want desperately to put weight on I'm 5'11" and only way ten stone . If you were to put your middle fingers together and then your thumbs that is the size of my thigh , it's depressing me a lot and need help from somewhere , but don't know where to turn :(

Darren, it is probably because your blood sugars have been too high for a while. Now that you are on insulin you should gradually start to put the weight back on. When I was diagnosed I weighed 8st 4lb - now I am back up to a healthy 11st 4lb 🙂 I'm 5'9". It did take a while though, so don't expect it to happen quickly. Just try and eat healthily and it will happen. 🙂

Hi from me too - West Brom, don't get calling me a Brummie - and up the Baggies, or if not, the Villa LOL

Yup - I dropped a stone in very short order, and I wasn't overweight in the first place - but being young and wanting to be Twiggy LOL I was quite pleased with the thin, but felt awful - so it was a relief when that stopped but the side effect was, I put the stone back on!

A lot of already shall we say cuddly people are dead scared of having to take insulin because apart from it sorting out diabetes (certain types of D anyway) - it's a GROWTH hormone! so they are afraid they'll put on weight - and some of em do.

But no such fears for you at the moment !

Don't be desperate about your weight though - once your D gets sorted - you'll get sorted.

As Northie asked - how did they come to decide you were one thing and now you ain't? or not. What tests did they do and are you going to a hospital diabetes clinic of are you being seen at the doctors?

hi Darren and welcome 🙂

When I was diagnosed aged 12 I had been on a 'diabetes weekend' with my brother and my family as he was already diagnosed and my parents were told I had an eating disorder and I should see a psychiatrist as I cried all the time - ironically I was diagnosed the day after that weekend when my parents suddenly twigged I had the symptoms!

You will put weight back on but as other have said it won't happen over night but everything will come together...

xx

Hi Darren welcome to the forum from a 'true brummie'....:D
