Type 2
Hi, I was diagnosed as Type 2 in Feb 2014 but just joined the forum yesterday. My control immediately after diagnosis was excellent. Changed my diet and walked much more, losing around 2.5st in weight in just a few months and in the words of my doctor, had completely turned it around. I felt great physically and mentally but just after Xmas 2014 I lost that control and 20 months later I've gained most of that weight back and was recently diagnosed as having angina. My GP, however, surprised me when she declared she was happy with my last results. I was expecting a rollocking!

Although your GP didn't give you a 'rollicking', I think you're probably giving yourself one Stuart and wanting to get back on track again. I was diagnosed in Feb '15 and like you, lost a considerable amount of weight and wholeheartedly embraced the low carb diet. It's hard to sustain because it has to be an everyday lifestyle change. I'm determined to do it though because it's too easy to slip. My advice would be to listen to yourself and not your GP on this occasion because you know how well you can feel with the right approach. Good luck with achieving that again.

Incidentally, what was your recent Hba1c result if you don't mind me asking?

Welcome to the forum 🙂. Keeping active is good ! It does your head the world of good 😎. Keep going

Hello and welcome from a fellow T2 diagnosed December 2014.

Amigo, you're absolutely correct, it's me that's having to deal with this and I'm not happy being 2st overweight, I'm not happy when I can't find the motivation to go for my walk.

Surprisingly my HBA1C was 6.2 (44) so obviously I'm doing something right but I just need to reduce my 'treats' and increase my exercise. Don't let yourself slip. I felt great when I had the motivation and I lost the weight and I don't understand why I can't get back to that place.

Welcome to the forum, Stuart Knox. Would setting mini goals to get you walking each day help? Eg walk to a location to take a photo or find a geocache or something? Or look at health walks, usually weekly. Or some councils provide free activities in parks. I'm currently providing a series of 12 orienteering sessions in 3 Leeds parks, which are for anyone who wants to walk or run round a park using a map to find controls. I'm going to play table tennis today, as I'm not working this morning - another free session in the same scheme.

I really hope you can get back to that place Stuart and it's a psychological thing. No matter how much people push us or we know we are doing wrong, we have to be in the right mind set. Hopefully, talking here will help you. Listening to your experience is helping me because I don't want to slip and gain the weight back either so I'm determined to keep focussed. So thanks for sharing that!

Your Hba1c is good but they can be deceptively so! So sometimes, just like you, I prefer to believe the knowledge of my own efforts than rely on them. Wishing you well, you know you can get back to where you want to be.

After an excellent start I also fell off the wagon. However, you're here...and that tells me that you're regaining the mindset you need to get back on track. Good luck comrade. 🙂

Hi Stuart,

It's hard to lose weight, but you know you can do it, just need to saddle up and get back on the horse.

What was your starting weight and goal weight?

Sorry everyone, had a busy few days and not been on the forum. Copepod, thanks for the advice. All spot on and sitting here shaking my head at myself because what you're suggesting really isn't hard. I have to be up front and say that sometimes I need a kick up the rear end! After the initial shock of being diagnosed and my great discipline for the first 10 months, I've strangely gone back to a 'I'll be fine, I can start tomorrow' attitude. There are a lot of days when I walk for 30mins or sometimes triple that but other days when I sit about being lazy. I took up photography at the start of the year and that has certainly helped. Your comments have fired me up somewhat, let's hope I feel the same in the morning!!

Amigo, thanks for your comment. I'd be delighted if my experience motivates you every day and keeps that door shut behind you. What I'm enjoying in this forum is speaking to people who have 'read the book, seen the movie....' and know what it's like. Nobody is criticising, nobody is pushing but all are providing support and sharing experiences. As you say, being pushed doesn't do anything if within ourselves we're not ready to be pushed. Good luck, although you probably don't need it. You seem to be well on top of this and I'm sure you will continue on the right track.

Marsbartoastie, I'm confident that the comments from you and others on here will give me the motivation I need. When I hear how well others are doing it makes me feel that I'm missing out on that feel good factor I had in the beginning. When I get back to where I want to be I'll be posting a thank you to everyone here. Thanks for the good wishes and of course, it's straight back at you.

PinkGrapefruit, yes it's hard but I suppose we often make it harder than it has to be. At the moment if I were to get back on the horse the poor thing would collapse beneath me, but maybe I'll start by holding it's reins and walking beside it for a while 🙂. Was 15st 4lbs when diagnosed (5ft 11in) so I was in the obese bracket. I'm aiming for 13st. Just before Xmas 2014 I was half a stone away from it. I've not weighed myself for a while, but I feel (and look) very similar to my pre diagnosis weight of over 15st.

Thank you everyone for taking the time to reply and encourage me. Your comments are very much appreciated. 🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂

Hi Hobie, yeah that's what annoys me most! I'm aware of the healthy mind - healthy body cycle and having got there I should have stayed in that nice place. I'll get there again. Thank you 🙂

Look forward to hearing more about your walks, seeing photography etc. How about posting what you're going to do tomorrow, then posting when you've done it? I wasn't working today, which meant I fixed my flat bike tyre, ready to cycle to work tomorrow and Mon. Will have to drive to work Sat and Sun, as it's further, plus need to take lots of kit, including flag, for orienteering in parks sessions, which include walking / running to place / collect controls.

Small steps today. Had to see my GP (non-diabetic issue) which gave me a 25 min walk and then in to meet my partner from her work (a 15 min walk), so nothing great unfortunately. Generally try to walk at least 45-60 mins per day but recently it's not been happening as much as I'd like. Hopefully I can do a bit more tomorrow.

Onward and upward Stuart 🙂 I'll check back tomorrow for your exercise update.

Moderate steps are the right approach, Stuart. Far too many people would drive instead of walking or cycling short journeys to GP, meet partner etc. Your approach is better for personal health as well as environment! 🙂
