Relationship to Diabetes
At risk of diabetes
Hi Everyone, I've just been diagnosed as pre diabetic and am quite confused about what that really means and what I have to/need to do. The doctor has informed me via text and given me a couple of websites to look at. Shocking I know, hence why I'm confused and worried about this. I'm a 58 year old Vegi that's not overweight. I don't drink much (2 to 4 units a week) and eat as healthy as possible. I really could do with some advice and information of the journey ahead. Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Welcome @Seain 🙂 You could start by looking at the Learning Zone, which is the orange tab at the top of this page. Ask any questions you want. There are lots of friendly, helpful people here.

Prediabetes is a name given to an HbA1C result of between 42 and 47mmol/mol which basically means your body is starting to struggle metabolising carbohydrates and without taking some action in modifying your diet you could go on to be diagnosed with diabetes as the threshold for that is over 47mmol/mol. Normal blood glucose is below 42mmol/mol. How much work you will need to do depends on how close to that you are.
All carbohydrates convert to glucose so reducing the carbs in your diet will help.
This link has some good explanation and some menu plans including a veggie one which should give you some ideas for modifying your diet. https://lowcarbfreshwell.com//

@Seain welcome to the forum. Do you know your hba1c result? Prediabetes is between 42 and 47. I discovered last year that my blood test hadn't been checked for diabetes for 10 years. I asked to be tested and first test was 69 . The second test three weeks later was 64. You have had a warning. You need to move more and lose belly fat. Your waist should be half or less of your height. Mine isn't yet. When I was diagnosed my bmi was 32 it is now a healthy bmi but I need to lose more.
You need to go through your diet checking where the sugar and carbs are. Generally you may need to increase protein and good fat ( so you dont lose weight]and reduce carbs. I eat about 130 grams of carbs others choose to eat much less. My usual breakfast is full fat Greek style plain yoghurt with blueberries, raspberries or strawberrieswith a few nuts or seeds. As prediabetic you are deciding how you want to change re movement and diet. You might find you like eating a lot of tropical fruit a d making it an occasional treat is enough or you love rice/ pasta/potato or bread. It's a case of reducing carbs and not adding sugar to things. I've chosen to use alternatives to pasta and rice but still have some potato and bread. You are aiming to lower your reading. As far as alcohol most wine and spirits are fine at the limits you are drinking but you may want to be careful if it is cider or beer. You choose if a pint of beer a week is important then maybe have a brisk walk to the pub.
This nhs site has lots of useful info. On the left handside are links to websites. The Freshwell site has a good graphic about food whereas the Caldesi site has good strategies a d some vegetarian recipes.

Hi @Seain and welcome to the forum
You have already had some good advice and from what you have said it sounds like Diet and Exercise may be the issue.

You are PRE Diabetic so no need to panic and all you may need to do is some slight tweaks with your diet and where possible increase your exercise levels.
That said the more we know about you the more we can offer some help and advice

Alan 😉

What do you consider a healthy diet? ie what do you typically eat for breakfast, lunch and evening meal. Things like porridge and bananas and wholemeal bread and pasta and brown rice and sweet potatoes are considered healthy but they may contain more carbs than your body can cope with. I am not saying that you shouldn't or can't eat these things but you may need to look at reducing your portion size and frequency of eating and add extra lower carb foods to your meals to bulk them out.

I wonder if some finger prick testing around meals would help you to fine tune your diet to what your particular body can cope with. Many people here on the forum find it an invaluable tool in enabling them to see how their body responds to certain foods and helps them to know what they can safely eat and what portion size and what isn't worth the Blood Glucose (BG) upheaval.... except perhaps on very special occasions like birthdays and Christmas. .

Hi @Seain ! You've had a lot of great advice already so I won't repeat everything, but just wanted to extend my welcome to the forum to you! And as others have mentioned, feel free to ask any questions, rant or share as much or as little as you feel comfortable with :star:
