Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi everyone, I'm Sammy, I'm 28 and I was diagnosed with type 1 at the age of 23 . I was diagnosed on a Sunday evening, after collapsing and going in to DKA. When I was rushed to hospital unconsious , my sugars read '34.5' (god knows how I am still here!) Before being diagnosed, I knew barely anything about diabetes - I just thought it was something that stopped you eating ice cream! (how naieve I was) I now spend a lot of time educating people on Diabetes, and how to spot the warning signs. I like to think I have it under tight control, but like most normal 20 somethings, I do of course enjoy the cheeky crisps, and Cider! (my downfall) Looking forward to getting to know you all 😛

Hiya Sammy, welcome to the forum 🙂 What insulin regime are you on? I was pretty much in the same position as you - DKA and BG of 37 mmol/l at diagnosis, knew nothing but learned quickly and now spend my time looking after this place!

Everyone is really friendly, so join in wherever you wish, I look forward to hearing more from you 🙂

Hi Northener, I'm on humulin split between Morning and night, then novorapid throughout the day.. I did start on Levemir originally but found it wasn't doing enough, so switched to humulin.

Hiya, Samalamaloo.🙂 Love the name!

Thanks Bloden, it's my 'twitter' name, so comes everywhere with me.

Welcome to the forum samalamaloo 🙂

Welcome samalamaloo, hope you enjoy the mingling :D

Welcome and I hope you will find everyone as friendly, knowledgeable and kind as I have done. 🙂

Hello and welcome along samalamaloo 🙂

This is a very friendly place to mingle with fellow diabetics. There's a wealth of experience and great support.

I've not had a cheeky cider for years since a very unfortunate cider based incident as a student 😱😱

oh flower, you do have to elaborate now on this cider based incident! hehe x

Take my advice and don't ask is best - it might be TMI - for instance, my parents told me it was down to cider I was conceived !

Hi - welcome to our merry band.

The only thing I have to say about your regime is you're lucky - on Humulin I lost all my hypo symptoms until I was well below 3, sometimes below 2 - and the crash barrier of the M42 most likely bears both of the scars. Then another spate when only by his skill - another twice - did my husband keep his motorbikes upright with me collapsing whilst riding pillion. Consequently I hate the stuff.

With a passion. It's the invention of the Devil.

Oh Jenny that sounds awful :(
I have noticed that I rarely notice now when hypo until it's almost too late! a little scary when I live alone x

Right mate! - Humulin I is not a true basal insulin,, it's an INTERMEDIATE insulin. It spikes as much as having another jab of fast acting would do and if you haven't sufficient carbs on board when it does, goodbye normality, hallo A & E ceiling.

One question about your previous Levemir experience - you WERE injecting twice a day weren't you? I ask because some HCPs seem to labour under the misapprehension that it's once a day. Likewise, some are also a bit clueless about the fact that whilst Lantus does last some people 24 hours OK too - for others, twice a day works a lot better. There's another one now - Tesiba, which does something different again but it's very new and I was already pumping when it came out so I can't comment at all. Very few are on it, yet.

Have a look at these profiles which show you what all of them do (you'll most likely need to up your screen resolution for the detailed Levemir graph, but actually it isn't as complicated as it first looks as long as you know your weight, and have a calculator to work out your dose per kilo. Then, you can follow the lines.

and then read this

Have you ever tested your Basal insulin dose? It doesn't stay the same for more than 'several' months at a time, whether you're on MDI or pumping.

Happy reading - and hope it helps.

If not - ask ask ask and carry on asking. I do !

wowzers, despite the odd hypo here and there with humulin overall i've found it to be ok. With levemir , yes, I was injecting twice a day and still found it to not do enough i even ended up taking metformin as well , i did alter my doses and played around with it to try and find a way that worked, but it just wasn't for me. Overall my control is much better with humulin.
without sounding silly, what is a basal insulin dose?

Read the last link - it explains !

You need to know these things, in order to live long and prosper, flower!

a very interesting read, i have a feeling I am going to learn a lot on here 🙂
