Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi I was diagnosed type 2 in January, after a rough 6 months of multiple infections, and feeling quite unwell; and being unable to tolerate the side effects of metformin, the consultant suggested following the Newcastle / 600 cal diet (800 actually when fresh veg are included). I am now on week 10 (my hospital suggested 12 weeks) . Very interested to find if anyone else is doing the same (under medical supervision) ? 🙂

Welcome pinksirose.

While there's naturally been a fair bit of interest in the Newcastle ultra low calorie diet, I don't think any members are following it - not least because many people with type 2 diabetes struggle to get any contact with medical specialists, let alone ones familiar with the diet.

How are you getting on with it?

thanks for support

Hi, I guess I must be lucky to have seen a consultant at our local hospital, I dont know anyone else with diabetes so didnt realise there was a problem getting hospital support.
I have been on three slimfasts a day (made wiht skimmed milk) and a cereal bowl of veg ( I make soup with non starchy veg, and a stock cube) I have seen the dietician twice, and consultant twice, but otherwise have been on my own with it. I have felt cold, and grumpy at times, but have adjusted pretty well now. I have joined an online diet and fitness forum which has helped me (logging what I eat each day, and great encouragment from two online 'friends' who have been great) I have taped and re watched 'the hairy dieters', which has felt like a support group ! I have lost 3 stone 3lb, and my bloods have gone from 19 to between 5 and 7 (below 5 before meals, about 7 after meals), I have also been able to come of statins . I saw the dietician today and we agreed for me to continue on this regime until the end of November (which will be 16 weeks in total) as I began at 18stone 9, and whilst I am feeling well, bloods are good , and still motivated we are aiming for me to move from BMI 'obese' to 'overweight', and then gradually reintroduce normal foods over December before I see the consultant in January. I am having full blood tests at the end of November and then it will be monitored to see if I need any additional medication (not on anything at all at the moment)
