Are you willing to tell us about how you came to be diagnosed, what your HbA1c was, what exercise you do regularly, and what medications you are on. It will help us tailor our advice to you. Some people may just need to make tweaks and others need to make bigger changes. Also if you have problems with your weight and blood pressure. Best wishes
Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, but glad you have joined our community 🙂
One of the biggest questions when trying to get to grips with your diabetes is often ‘what can I eat’ and while there are obvious things like cakes, biscuits, sweets and sugary drinks that you will want to cut out straight away, you might be surprised how much *all* carbohydrate affects your BG levels, including rice, pasta, potatoes, bread, pastry, grains, cereals and many fruits.
Many new members also find it can be really helpful to keep a food diary for a week or two. Be brutally honest! Note down everything you eat and drink. It can be especially helpful to calculate a reasonable estimate the amount of total carbohydrate (not just ‘of which sugars’) in your meals, snacks and drinks. It might sound like a bit of a faff, but all that packet squinting and ingredient weighing will give you a clear idea of which are the main sources of carbs in your menu. This might give you some easy wins, and obvious candidates for a little carb moderation too.
If you would like a good overview of T2 diabetes, to add to the knowledge you’ve already picked up, you will find the ‘learning zone’ full of really helpful bite sized modules (orange tab in the main menu). Additionally, members here frequently recommend Maggie Davey’s Letter and Gretchen Becker’s book T2 Diabetes, the first year, which you can work through gradually and will give you a solid starting point.
Good luck, and let us know how you get on 🙂
