Fab well done. Great news on getting it down.

Mine was 50 on the 7/11, and have followed low carb ever since.Just wondered if your calorie intake was roughly the same?

I'm not eating less calories, just less carbs.

Thanks a lot.

Thanks @Shaun1971! I was so relieved with the result.

I have been counting carbs but not calories, so I can’t give you a full answer. Since being on a low carb diet, I am more aware of portion sizes and have definitely reduced the amount I put on my plate. I have cut out cakes, pastries, biscuits and chocolate, so those calories have gone. I realised that I was eating those out of habit or boredom or stress. My diet has definitely improved with more veg, pulses and the right kind of fruit.

I had rapid weight loss in the first few weeks (too rapid I discovered on the forum) when I first went low-carb but this settled down. I’ve finally reached a healthy BMI and have a few more pounds to lose, but that will be gradual.

Good luck with your low-carb diet and in getting your blood glucose levels down. Your hba1c levels were similar to mine. Keep up the good work and let us know how you get on when you you are next tested.

All the best.

i use Accu chek and find that easy but its reslly whats available to you. I love the fastclix to take tye droplet of blood too.
i got two free trials of libre . The first came off on a weekend and the other came off in two hours.? So i gave up.
i like before and two hours after to see if it shows a spike. i now just test daily unless there is a new food that i want to test.
Good luck with all you do.
This forum is great , you will get support as I have I am sure.

Hi @Shaun1971. In my earlier reply, I forgot to mention the Carbs and Cals book/app. I don’t know if you use that? I also use the Freshwell app and record my weekly progress. I find that when I get a bit discouraged, it’s good to look back and see how far I’ve come. All the best.

Thanks a lot Allthings, and it's hearing stories like yours which give me encouragement.

Diet now is mostly greek yougurt, blueberries, eggs, fish, steak, lean meat and heaps of veg.

Also replaced beer with brandy and getting out and about more. Wasn't aware of the carbs/cal app but will look. Slow and steady wins the race.

Thanks @Shaun1971,
Sounds like you have made a great start with your change of diet and exercise. You are absolutely right - slow and steady is the right approach! All the best.

Hi everyone,
Good news! I got my hba1c results and my level has gone down to 45 (from 50 & 52) through a low-carb diet and exercise.

Ah that’s great news @AllThings

Huge congratulations on the improvements you’ve seen so far. Keep going!! 🙂

well done .

Hi everyone,
I have been lurking in the forum for a while, and decided to join in properly. I have found it to be a really supportive space and I have learned so much from reading posts. I was pre-diabetic for several years but found out in July I’d moved into the diabetic range (routine test due to pre-diabetic status). In late August I had a meeting with a diabetic nurse who told me my repeat blood tests showed Hba1c levels of 50 then 52. The nurse was keen to prescribe Metformin but I wanted to try diet and exercise first. It has been an anxious time and a steep learning curve!

Thanks to the forum, I found the Freshwell site and have been following its advice on a low carb diet. I have changed my breakfast to Greek yoghurt and berries and am eating more of the right veg and fruit. I’m finding ways to fill the space left by potatoes, pasta, bread, rice (and cakes!). It seems to be working and I’ve lost over a stone and gone from a BMI of 29.5 to 25.5.

I haven’t yet tried the BG meter and finger prick test method. Maybe I could also apply for a Libre 2 trial and try that?

My blood test also showed high cholesterol so I’ve been prescribed Atorvastatin. I was concerned that one of the side-effects is raised BG, but I guess my GP was trying to balance risks. I’m trying to get my head around eating to improve both diabetes and cholesterol.

I just wanted to say thank you to the forum members for their posts, which have been really helpful to someone new to the whole T2 journey.

Thanks @Ange55! You can find Freshwell at https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/ Their site also has links to their app or you can find it in an App Store. The Freshwell site is run by a GP practice and the resources are free. All the best

I followed the principals in that program as it made perfect sense, not the meal plans per se as I'm not much of a follower of specific meal plans. Despite probably 50 cookery books, I usually make something out of my head (brains on toast).
Anyway it worked for me, I reduced my HbA1C from 50mmol/mol to 42 in 3 months and to 38 in another 6 and following the same low carb regime which is my new way of eating. That alongside using my home blood glucose monitor to test was was OK and what was not.
I hope you find something which suits you.

Hi everyone,
I’m learning that in learning to manage diabetes there are many bumps in the road. I’ve been laid low with a viral infection over the past month (not tested positive for Covid) so I’ve not done my usual exercise or activities. These things happen and I have to learn to be patient.
I’ve finally got a BG meter, test strips and a Fastclix lancet, thanks to recommendations on here. The Fastclix lancet isn’t painful at all. I’m still getting to grips with the system of loading the blood into the test strip but I’m sure I’ll get better at it. I have arthritis in my hands so my dexterity is not the best.

On the positive side, I’ve managed to avoid the temptation of a big box of chocolates that a family member got for their birthday. That’s a big change for me. I guess that what I’m also learning is that it can be easy to give yourself a hard time by thinking how far you still have to go, instead of also taking time to acknowledge how far you’ve come.

Everything gets easier. Wow the others will not believe i have said that.
It foes though and each time you say no and you realise how less ill you feel. I said i was fine but no i was not as once you feel better it hits you how bad sugar makes us feel.
Brilliant news on the fast clix and it becomes easier. i now feel I've got it off to a T .
Have a good Christmas.
Its low carb not no carb and a treat now and again is allowed if you cope. Its your body and you are in control.

Thanks so much @Nayshiftin! I’m sure it will get easier, Great point about being in control, especially with Christmas coming up. I’ll put some treats in my “treat bank,” but it will be up to me how to spend them!

I managed to do BG tests this evening. Pre meal the level was 5.6 and two hours later, it was 7.2. Happy with that. The meal was left-over home-made aubergine and tomato curry served with cauliflower rice and bulked out tonight with a can of lentils.

Wishing you a lovely Christmas too!
