Hi Everyone, Newly Type 2 Diabetic. 27.06.17 HbA1c 79, getting to grips with the diet and tablets...... having been diagnosed on a routine blood test 🙂, I have been put straight onto Metformin 500g x 2 daily and also statins as my cholesterol is 4.8. According to my practice nurse I am a genetic type 2 diabetic. I have lost 11lbs in the last 6 weeks watching my carbs and sugar intake, (weight is 10st 9lbs and I am 5ft 7in) Am I being too hard on myself food wise? it feels like it, but that could be just that I am not chowing down on biscuits, cakes and sweeties anymore.

Hi Island Girl, welcome to the forum 🙂 That's a good weight loss, well done! 🙂 I've got a bit of news for your nurse - all people with diabetes develop it because they have a genetic disposition, there are millions of people who fit the stereotype who don't have diabetes and never will 🙄 Do you have any other family members who have/had it? I notice that you have set your type as Type 1.5? This is a slow-onset form of Type 1 diabetes, which is different to Type 2 and eventually leads to insulin use. Type 2 is generally due to insulin resistance - the insulin is being produced, but can't be used efficiently.

Also, don't be over-concerned about your cholesterol level, it's not particularly high, in fact it is below the 5.0 they would call healthy in a person without diabetes. Do let the nurse know if you have a problem with statin side effects.

I'd recommend reading Maggie Davey's letter to give you a good grounding in diet choices etc., and also getting a copy of the excellent Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker 🙂

Let us know if you have any concerns or questions and we will be more than happy to help! 🙂

Having said that, though, some types are more strongly genetic than others, I'm wondering if the nurse is thinking of MODY, for example.

Thanks for the update Northerner..... I have reset my diabetes type to 2 now 🙂, In answer to family members and diabetes, my mother had type 2.... your also right it is insulin resistance in my case..... only side effect that I have had is a bit of dizziness during the first couple of weeks of taking..... and the usual windiness 🙄. There seem to be many trains of thought when it comes to Diabetic Nurses, I have seen two and neither of them give me the same answers.... very confusing when your first starting out... but getting to grips with it now. Thanks for the two references, I will look at both of them and I am also looking for a good cookbook o_O.

She has not said anything to me about MODY .. so I can only assume that I am type 2.

Hi again Island Girl - well done on your weight loss - thats good going in just 6weeks🙂 I always recommend the book CARB & CALORIE COUNTER for diabetes management - its helpful as to weight loss - portion control & healthy eating - it can be bought from Amazon for about £10. It has over 1700 food & drink photos & a section relating to when eating out. There's also a pocket size version called POCKET COUNTER for when out & about - fits into a handbag or pocket. Hope you find this helpful too.

Are you self testing your bgls (Blood glucose levels) to determine which foods/drinks you can or cannot tolerate? To begin with its best to test your blood glucose with a finger prick test upon waking before you get out of bed - pre each meal and 2hrs post meals.

If you are one of the lucky ones you will have been given a testing kit from your GP or DSN (Diabetes Specialist Nurse) If you haven't then I would suggest you ask for one. If you are refused one then ask why not. If you meet with any problems regarding this then do please come back to as we @Bubbsie may be able to help you.

If you would like to join in with our WEIGHT LOSS GROUP then feel free - you'll find it in the Diabetes Support Forum column.

Sometimes we have to be hard on ourselves until we find a happy medium but it sounds like you've taken the bull by its horns to eagerly manage your diabetes the best you can. If you have any more concerns then please do return to us & we will do our best to help you, good luck & take care x
