Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi there, I've been diabetic (type 2) for years but the tablets are no longer working and have been put on insulin. My BG level has been astronomical. I started insulin Wednesday evening, my lunchtime BG was 23.3 (yes, astronomical). I'm on Humalin 1 twice a day, 8 units each time. My morning BG level today was 7.6 which is a vast improvement. I have a telephone appointment with my DN on Monday (and I see her Thursday). One question that worries me is that the level will just keep dropping. Any advice would be most welcome. Thank you in advance.

If you drop then you take on fast acting carbs such as glucose tablets, jelly babies etc

Now your on insulin there is a very high chance you will experience hypo's, even those of us that have been at insulin years don't always get it right and other things play a part too outwith our control

Just make sure you have things to hand if you do drop below 4, like I mentioned, glucose tablets, jelly babies, small cartons of fruit juice, small mixer cans of fizzy juice etc, treat with 15g fast acting carbs, wait 15 minutes, re test and if necessary repeat the treatment

Sorry it may not be the answer you were hoping for but don't panic, it isn't the end of the world and if it happens it happens, it doesn't mean you've done anything wrong
xx

You’ve written Humulin 1 - is that Humulin I (that is, the letter that comes between H and J). If so, it’s a basal/background insulin and works slowly over approx 12 hours. If your blood sugar is consistently too low, then your dose will be adjusted. As @Kaylz says, if by chance you go low now then have something sugary to put your blood sugar back up. You might also want to have a small amount of longer acting carbs eg a plain digestive to stop it dropping back down.

You’ve put your morning blood sugar - are you also testing at other times eg after meals, before bed?

Welcome to the forum @LynW1234

Hope you get some reassurance with your phone call tomorrow and that things begin to settle BG-wise, rather than dropping much further.

Let us know how things go tomorrow 🙂
