Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi, just joined the group with type 2 diabetes on metformin slow release twice daily. Really need some help in losing weight to try to control my diabetes and reduce my BMI - any advice appreciated

Welcome. Losing weight is mainly about changing what and how much you eat. Can you give some examples of the kind of things you eat and any changes you might have already started making to that?

Welcome to the forum from another Sue, a bit older than you though.
Metformin will help your body use the insulin it is producing more effectively but you still need to make some lifestyle changes, the main one being making some adjustments to your diet. Many find that a low carbohydrate approach is successful in both reducing blood glucose as well as in losing weight. This link may give you some ideas. https://lowcarbfreshwell.co.uk/
Other people find that a low calorie or shakes based regime gives them a kick start but whatever you choose has to be enjoyable otherwise it will not be sustainable long term.
I assume you are a fair way into the diabetes zone as you have been prescribed metformin but how far will determine how much work you will need to do.

Welcome to the forum @Sistersue

Has weight gain been a challenge for you for a while? Or has your weight crept up in recent years?

Have you had success with any weight loss strategies in the past?

Some members like the support of an organised group like Weight Watchers, Slimming World, or a local equivalent. While others find simply reducing portion size and cutting out the empty calories it can be so easy to fall into these days gets them off to a steady start.

Some members opt for a moderate or low carbohydrate menu, which has the added benefit of reducing glucose levels, even if some good fats are introduced to help feelings of fullness.

Good luck with whichever method you choose. We have a friendly weight loss group where members share their experiences, and update their progress.
