Relationship to Diabetes

Hi. I was prediabetic on Metformin for years as I have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. Post menopausal but still affecting me dreadfully.
I managed to control it with keto diet but am currently “lapsed” and I suspect will need to go back on Metformin. Blood test on 18th October.

When I came off keto (was still pretty careful) I piled weight back on and now it doesn’t seem to shift no matter what I do.

My PCOS means that I can’t dissolve blood clots and have a long term clot. Needed a knee arthroscopy about 10 years ago but wouldn’t touch it because of clot. Now got problems in both knees and lower back and struggle to walk at all. (I know! I’m old and falling to bits!!) so I need a lot of support, encouragement and advice.

I’ve been retired for around 12 years so plenty of time. Am an ex primary school teacher. Thanks for reading and feel free to post offering advice, help and support.

Hi and welcome.
Sorry to hear you have a few health issues to deal with as well as diabetes. Just wondering if you have had your thyroid checked if you are doing all the right things again but weight not shifting.
Not sure how you feel about swimming or exercising in water but that might be an option to explore if knees are complaining and you haven't tried it. I believe @Felinia goes to regular aquafit classes and finds them enjoyable as well as beneficial.
Good luck with your blood test on the 18th. Do let us know how you get on with that. If you have done keto before then I doubt we can offer you much in the way of low carb dietary advice apart from perhaps seeing if there are any of our own menu/recipe choices which you might like. There is currently a photo thread of meal ideas in the Food section of the forum. Some are higher carb than others, so you need to be mindful of that but might give you a bit of inspiration.

Sometimes just being on the forum and reading about other people who have battling similar challenges lifts a bit of the day to day strain of managing the condition and feeling less alone with it. I certainly find that although the practical tips and overall knowledge I gain from the forum is equally invaluable. I hope you find the same benefits.

Are you on any anticoagulant or antiplatelet medication to help with the issue with the blood clots, I can't see blood clots mentioned in the PCOS information. Is that an unusual effect?
This link may help you with some low carb ideas. https://lowcarbfreshwell.co.uk/

I have just one blood clot in my thigh. I am on Warfarin for life as hospital/anticoagulation clinic say it won’t disperse. It seems fairly firmly attached. Don’t know why they don’t use a clot busting drug to disperse it.
I’m not sure if blood clots are a fairly normal thing with PCOS? All I do know is if you DO get a clot (mine was following an accident) your body doesn’t produce plasmin if you have PCOS. It is that which is needed to dissolve blood clots. I think it’s one of the key elements needed in order to dissolve clots. I’m not medically trained at all so I don’t really understand it properly.

Welcome to the forum @VJB

Sorry to hear about your PCOS and how difficult it is making things. Always a bit more complicated where members have multiple conditions with overlapping (and sometimes contradictory) requirements.

Good that you’ve been able to manage your diabetes / prediabetes in the past, but sorry to hear your weight has risen. That may be making your diabetes a little more difficult to manage as increased weight can be associated with insulin resistance. Metformin sounds like a good bet, as it can help reduce both insulin resistance, and the amount of glucose released from the liver.

Were you on regular or slow release Met before?

I was on slow release Metformin before. Guess after my blood test I will be told if I need to go back on it.
Think I am very insulin resistant. Before when I did Keto I kept my carbs to 20 a day which made eating so restrictive and after a couple of years it just became too much. Without the exercise I’m not sure if I will lose much at all particularly if I “up” my carbs. Eating all the fat put my cholesterol up too (both HDL & LDL) and doc wanted to put me on statins which I’ve refused so far. People seem to have lots of side effects. Might investigate swimming again but it is so expensive to go regularly on a pension in this area of the country.

I believe some GPs are allowed to prescribe things like swimming which gives people reduce if not free entry to the swimming pool.
