Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi
I found out on Friday that I have type 2 diabetes and although I am overweight I do eat healthy and exercise 4 times a week and drink loads of water a day I have been given Metformin 500mg to take daily and to increase in a weeks time.

Tomorrow I am having a phone call with the diabetic nurse who will explain everything to me.

To say I was shocked when I found out was an understatement but it also explain some of my health problems even though my sugar level was found out by accident when I was having my bloods done for high blood pressure due to bring on Ramapril and then had a 2nd test 2 weeks later and the sugar level was still high.

Hopefully I can get this under control x

Welcome to the forum, it is sometimes a shock to receive a diabetes diagnosis but sometimes it can be a relief as it can explain the symptoms that you have, and it is a condition with some attention to your diet you can do something about.
It is a good idea to have a list of questions for your appointment in particular it is important to know what your HbA1C is as that will indicate how much work you need to do. Anything over 47mmol/mol is a diabetes diagnosis, if it is not too high then dietary changes can be sufficient but if metformin has been prescribed then in may be that is is quite high.
Have a look at this link for some good explanation and a way of modifying your diet, some do's and don'ts and meal ideas based on real food.

Thank you for the link - I will make a list of questions for tomorrow and will keep a food diary to pinpoint my weak food allergies although I must admit I don’t eat excessive amounts of pasta and white rice but hopefully get it u see control through trial and error.

Welcome to the forum @m.s.martin1326

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis :(

But hopefully it has been caught relatively early, and you may be able to make some positive changes with advice and inout from your nurse tomorrow.

What health problems have you been experiencing that you think may have been connected to your emerging diabetes?

And were you given the result of your HbA1c, that’s the 3 month reading of your general glucose levels, and will be a reading above 47mmol/mol.

If you’d like some background reading you might find the Learning Zone helpful (orange tab in the main menu), which has whole heaps of modules you can take at your own pace.

Hi,

No I wasn’t given my result but will ask tomorrow.
I found out I had high blood pressure due to getting dizzy spells and my test being tight.

For the last 6/7 months I have been training with a PT 3 times a week and I also walk in my lunch hour weather and time permitting.
I have been very tired over the last few months and also although I was getting stronger with my stamina and was toning up but my abdomen was not going down. I can’t say if I was thirsty as I drink a lot of water but I know my mouth did get dry.

For the last 2/3 years I have been a vegan then moved to a vegetarian and now introduced fish in my diet so my food was healthy and we cooked from scratched most of the time and I drink about 3 Litres of water a day along with fruit I have tried to avoid refined sugar hence why I was surprised but have found out that it is on my dads side of the family.

Hopefully the nurse will help me with how to achieve getting the sugar level down and also on here hence why I have joined.

Thank you for yout responses x

It's the total amount of carbohydrate in food that increases our blood glucose so we need to keep an eye on - and therefore sugar is merely (another) carbohydrate to any human body.

There can be an awful lot of carb. in some fruits, especially those we used to recognise as 'tropical' - so that's bananas, mangos, pineapple and large sweet juicy oranges, grapes, dates and figs.
